The third movie in the Madoka Magica franchise is due out this fall, according to the film’s cast. The information was released along with the third movie’s trailer during the Anime Contents Expo in Japan this week.
The previous two Madoka Magica movies (Madoka Magica: Beginnings and Madoka Magica: Eternal) were recaps of the events of the TV anime series. They featured some new animation and other small changes, but no new ground was really covered when it came to the plot. The third movie breaks away from that trend completely and will continue the story from where the series and the second movie left off.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica got a lot of positive attention when it first aired in 2011. The story of middle school student Madoka Kaname starts off as a standard magical girl series until about three episodes in when the plot takes an unexpectedly dark turn. The series has been lauded as a unique subversion of the sugary sweet mahou shoujo genre.
The first two parts of the movie trilogy have been showing in the US and Canada in select locations. To see if there is a showing somewhere near you, check the website here. You can also stream the TV anime at Crunchyroll.
