Matthew
Ah Matthew: the jolly thief. He’s a rather shrewd character who at the start of the game is just that, a thief who agrees to open doors and chests for Lyn. We later find out that he’s really a spy for Hector, working to find out if Lyndis is acting for her own selfish gain. He wants to know who to gain favor with after all. From his supports with Guy (a friend and swordsman) we learn how crafty Matthew is. He is the sort who chooses his words carefully and is quite the trickster. Guy owes Matthew a few favors and Guy challenges Matthew to a battle with the favors at stake. Matthew says he chooses the time of the fight and ambushes him in his sleep. Under that fun, carefree guise is the mind of a master spy.
What makes Matthew so interesting is that he grows and changes strongly over the course of the game. He fell in love with another spy called Leila. Leila died at the hands of Nergal’s group and this revelation causes a great change in Matthew’s demeanor. Matthew tries to shrug it off as death is always hanging over the head of a spy but you can tell he is having trouble coping with her passing. As a spy, 
Matthew must be in control at all times and think coolly and rationally, but he is not prepared for this sudden death. ” Tell me, Leila … This is what you’d want, right? You wouldn’t want me to give up. I’ll mourn for you when our battle is won. I must fulfill my duty. So rest … I promise I will take care of everything.” When he confronts his lover’s killer, Jaffar, he is filled with rage. Again as a spy he needs to be cool headed but with his lover’s killer standing before him, how can he? He threatens Jaffar with his life and the life of those he holds dear but eventually realizes that nothing good will come from revenge. Maybe he sees Jaffar as the person he will become if enacts his revenge: a cold blooded killer.
