This party’s getting crazy

Capcom’s Hideaki Itsuno (director of Devil May Cry 2-4, Dragon’s Dogma) took to the PlayStation blog today to reintroduce Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition. The game is an expanded iteration of Devil May Cry 4, currently the best-selling Devil May Cry game. It features the content of all the original with extra features. For starters, the game is dual-audio! In addition, the game will see new characters playable aside from Dante and Nero. There will also be some new cutscenes for the new characters.

First is Vergil, whose appearance was teased since the game’s early promotional stages. Vergil’s combat in this game is inspired by his Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition rendition, while taking some notes from DmC: Devil May Cry. Vergil will have some new tools in the form of “Concentration” which it appears makes him powerful as players perform with more Style, and “Grim Trick” which is another teleporting ability that works with Sword Illusions (this particular type of Sword coming from DmC.) With even more tools, it’s hard to forget this devil’s power. This blog post from the Capcom-run community website Capcom Unity mentions that Vergil will have a “fully upgradeable moveset” and can be played on any mission in this game.

Newly introduced with today’s update are Lady and Trish. At the time of Devil May Cry 4, Dante and Trish work together as the demon-slaying business Devil May Cry, and Lady contracts the two to investigate Fortuna. Lady uses a style based on her weapon the Kalina Ann, focusing on long-range attacks. Itsuno comments that he feels Lady is conceptually different from most of the other Devil May Cry characters who may have more direct melee options. The grappling hook on the Kalina Ann will also give Lady special movement options similar to Nero. Lady is a playable option for Nero’s missions.

Trish returns with the sword of Sparda and does away with weapon-switching in favor of a more simple to execute battle style, requiring fewer button inputs. In that sense, Itsuno feels that she will also be different from other Devil May Cry characters. Trish is a playable option for Dante’s missions.

Special Edition will also see the return of “Legendary Dark Knight Mode” from the PC version of Devil May Cry 4, which is a separate difficulty mode testing players against hordes of stronger enemies that take more effort to kill throughout in-game missions. There will also be balance tweaks and new costumes introduced in DMC4:SE.

The game is due for release this summer and will only be available digitally. It will come out on three platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Below, check out the new trailer that was recently released.
