As a huge Platinum Games fan, I think today’s Nintendo Direct saved the best announcement for last. Bayonetta 2, the cult developer’s over-the-top sequel for the Wii U, is officially releasing on the system sometime in 2014. Along with this announcement, Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata introduced a new trailer for the game and touched upon some of the eponymous heroine’s new powers.

In Bayonetta 2, the Umbra Witches and Lumen Sages were two clans that wielded war against each other 500 years ago, and they were both created by a god called the Overseer. On top of a mountain called Thimbleventer, the missing link exists between Inferno and Paradiso, in the words of Rodin’s friend Enzo. So, Bayonetta must find and go inside the gates of Hell with a new (and as of yet unnamed) ally who holds the power to open them. In the process, she must also fight the last living Lumen Sage. At the end of the trailer, we also see Jeanne, and hear Bayonetta say, “Jeanne, I’m on my way. Just behave yourself for a bit longer.” Well, well.

After the trailer, Iwata showed off the Umbran Climax game mechanic, which gives Bayonetta the power to store energy and use it to release some particularly deadly super moves. And just as well, as the bosses in this game certainly look bigger and badder than ever before. Although the lack of a definitive release date is disappointing, if this trailer and previous announcements about the game are any indication, it will be well worth the wait. Bayonetta 2 is already confirmed to have a two-player mode, new GamePad-based control options, and, of course, Bayonetta’s slick new hairdo. In short, to answer Bayonetta’s question in this trailer, yes. We did miss you.
