You’d think Mario Kart 8 would become a known quantity, giving its part in the Mario Kart brand. Not so, it seems, as the trailer that debuted on today’s Nintendo Direct shows a brand new surprise.

Okay, sure the Koopalings have had a massive resurgence in recent years, so its not completely out of left field, but still, this may well be the biggest roster of characters a Mario Kart game has ever had. Also, did you notice the detail in the facial expressions? It seems like a waste of resources to model facial reactions, since the players won’t be able to see them most of the time, but that’s really cool.

Mario Kart 8 will launch worldwide on May 30. I’m looking forward to it.
