Lagiacrus and Rathalos

 #4. Barroth

Barroth

If someone were to turn the phrase, “Did anyone get the license plate of that truck?” into a monster, Barroth would be the result. To many hunters, Barroth was the first major roadblock that they came across in Monster Hunter Tri. While earlier monsters were fairly easy to deal with, and their attacks forgiving, Barroth brought something new to the table. To put it simply, Barroth loves to charge. Try to heal yourself, Barroth charges. Try to sharpen your weapon, Barroth charges. Dodge Barroth’s charge, Barroth charges. This is the beauty in Barroth’s design. You know that the charge attack is coming at any given time, and should not have much of a problem avoiding it. If you should be hit, however, you will regret it. Not only this, but Barroth’s other attacks are used to compliment its charging. The most notable of these is the mud that it shakes off to cover hunters in. Getting saddled with the Muddy status slows hunters down significantly, leaving them open to more charging terror. The first real heavy-hitting monster, hunters learn from Barroth that things are only going to get trickier moving forward.

#3. Jhen Mohran

Jhen Mohran

This is the big one, literally. Jhen Mohran is the final test that hunters must face before being allowed into high rank quests. Appropriately called the “Mountain Dragon,” Jhen Mohran is easily the largest monster in the game. Requiring more than standard weapons to take down the gargantuan creature, hunters board a sand ship armed with ballistae, cannons and other weapons to damage, repel and temporarily subdue the beast. While hunters generally need only damage a monster until it dies, success against Jhen Mohran requires knowledge of the ship’s weapons, and how best to use them, as a quest can end in failure if the dragon is allowed to damage the ship too much. Jhen Mohran is also the only monster that requires collaboration to defeat. Huge amounts of health coupled with a shorter-than-normal time limit mean that hunters will have to work together if they hope to defeat Jhen Mohran. Their hard work doesn’t go unrewarded, however, as defeating the dragon and becoming high rank hunters opens the door to much stronger weapons and armor, and starts hunters on the final path to completing the online quests.

#2. Agnaktor

Agnaktor

Gameplay-wise, hunters will notice that Agnaktor bears a resemblance to Lagiacrus, as well as employ a few similar attacks. This is not surprising, considering that the two monsters are both members of the Leviathan family. However, the similarities end there. Agnaktor is arguably the top of the food chain of the Volcano region in Monster Hunter Tri. While fairly beefy on its own, Agnaktor further complicates things by covering its body in lava, which eventually hardens, creating a protective shell that hunters will find difficult to crack. Additionally, despite the fact that its chosen haunts are comprised of solid rock, Agnaktor has no problem cruising through it as if it was water. Powerful, agile and built like a brick house (made of lava), Agnaktor is not a monster to be taken lightly. Oh, and it can shoot a giant laser from its mouth! Did I mention that? Yeah, that’s a thing, too.
