Ragnarok: Tactics

Ragnarok: Tactics

Ragnarok: Tactics has recently become available for pre-order on both GameStop
icon and Amazon websites.  The official release date is 11/6/12, and it appears that the game is available online-only, at least for now, so you might want to snag up a copy while you can.  It will also be released as an online title, so if you end up buying the game down the road, it will still be available.  The game is considered a ‘spin-off’ from Ragnarok Online, but whereas the former title was a massive multiplayer online rpg, Ragnarok: Tactics is a tactical role-playing game, in the same vein as Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem.  Honestly, I’d only heard the name mentioned in passing a few times, so when it was made apparent to me that the game was available for pre-order, I took the chance to find out more about the game, even if I don’t own a PSP.  I just hate seeing potentially-good games slip by without much notice.

I’d say out of the games mentioned above, it looks like Ragnarok: Tactics has a similar style and feel to Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre.  You can read about the basic premise of the game on the official website.

Taken from the website:

Long ago, a ferocious war, which came to be known as the Holy War, was waged. It was during this bloody conflict that humanity erected a magical barrier to keep both gods and demons from overrunning their world. Once the war was over, it was believed that peace would return. However, humanity soon began to turn on itself, and war began anew.
Many centuries after the Holy War, the Branshaldo Empire and the Aura Republic engaged in an extended war for control of the Grantria Peninsula. The conflict eventually ground to a halt and an uneasy truce was reached, as neither nation had the resources to continue fighting. Even so, the animosity between the two parties never faded, but smoldered beneath the surface, always threatening to explode into flames.
In the resulting tenuous peace, the people of the peninsula began to resume their normal lives, always aware that the war could resume at any time. It was against this backdrop that the protagonist begins their fight against rival factions, hordes of ravening monsters controlled by enigmatic puppet masters, and even their own dark impulses…

My guess is that Ragnarok: Tactics will have a somewhat limited physical release, what with the PSP market all but dried up in America, and the fact that it will be available on PSN.  It is being published by Aksys Games.
