4. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
The one that’s still my number one most-played game on 3DS, long after I stopped playing it. Atlus, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know who you were or what you were all about until a friend (and fan) enlightened me. Devil Survivor is many things to the Staff, all of whom are fans of Atlus, the Persona series, and spin-off games like these. But to me—it was nothing short of an obsession.
This is the strategy RPG genre all twisted up and remastered to reach outstanding new heights. It has traces of Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest, but the game takes place in modern-day Shibuya and traps its characters like caged animals in the middle of a demon apocalypse where the goal is simply Let’s survive. The staff may not have been as addicted to this game as I was, but they cannot deny the greatness of Atlus, 8th day bonus content, and good ole rock n’ roll courtesy of Kenji Ito.
The one that caused the most controversy amongst the staff. We’re all pretty divided when it comes to how we feel about this one, ladies and gentlemen. Half of us were dubious. “The World Ends With You is better than X game? REALLY?” and the other half confidently insisted “YES!” with plenty of praise and the power of polling. This game is perhaps the one that best proves no Top Ten list comes without controversy or one’s metaphorical claws coming out.
I assume everyone reading this is familiar with The World Ends With You. Some may not have played it, but you all know what it’s about by now. This game can be praised for offering something unique in the world of handhelds—a unique world, a unique gameplay formula, and definitely a unique soundtrack. Perhaps the reason it’s taken the number three spot because of this. Can’t deny there’s no other game on a handheld like it, that’s for sure.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
The one I can’t say much more about. It was the number one best-selling game on the 3DS Virtual Console for a really, really long time. And… I’ve already said way too much about it. While most of the staff don’t feel as strongly about it as I do, we all agree this game was eons ahead of its time, and remains one of the highest points of the Legend of Zelda franchise despite only appearing on small screens.
Koholint Island is truly a world all its own. Because of its unique charm, groundbreaking gameplay elements for a Zelda game, and absolutely outstanding soundtrack, it claims the number two spot among the greatest handheld games of all time. It’s destined to stay on the mind of every Zelda fan who’s ever played it, and…screw Pokemon, this was the Gameboy (Color)’s finest hour.
I’ve shown off quite enough about this game in places other than this list. Here’s something unique:
