Gundam will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2029, and in anticipation of that milestone, the Gundam 50th Anniversary Project has been launched with some new works being announced in the lead-up to that special year.
The first of the new works is a remaster of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime which first released in 1979. The remaster is planned to release in 2029, but no other information on the project is available at this time. You can read up on the original anime HERE and can watch the series on Crunchyroll.
Mobile Suit Gundam‘s story is described as follows:
In Universal Century 0079, Side 3, the space colony cluster furthest from Earth, proclaimed itself the “Principality of Zeon” and declared war on the Earth Federation. This marked the beginning of the Zeon War of Independence, a conflict that would come to be known as the One Year War. The devastation was unprecedented; in just one month of fighting, nearly half of the entire human population was lost. However, the war then fell into a stalemate that lasted for about eight months.
During this time, the Earth Federation Forces were developing their own mobile suits at Side 7 to break the deadlock. However, this secret project was discovered by Char Aznable of the Principality of Zeon, and the Zaku mobile suits he dispatched for reconnaissance turned the peaceful colony into a battlefield. Amidst the chaos, a civilian boy named Amuro Ray, while evacuating, ended up piloting the Federation’s prototype mobile suit, the “Gundam,” and defeated the invading Zaku units. Forced to abandon the colony, Amuro and other civilian refugees boarded the Federation’s new warship, the “White Base,” and embarked on a long journey to the Earth Federation Forces headquarters at Jaburo.
The second of the new works is the production of a new video for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. It should be noted that this announcement specifically mentions a video and not an anime series. Previously, in celebration of the anime’s 30th anniversary, a special video was released. More details on the video will be announced at a later date. You can read up on Gundam Wing HERE and watch the anime series on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
Gundam Wing‘s story is described as follows:
A.C. (After Colony) 195—the Space Colonies execute “Operation Meteor,” a drop operation of MS Gundams, against the United Earth Sphere Alliance, which seeks to rule them by force. Relena Darlian is swept into a vortex of destiny after catching sight of Heero Yuy, one of the Gundam Pilots. Four other Gundam Pilots sharing Heero’s objective—Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei—cross paths as if drawn together. However, they fall into a trap set by Treize Khushrenada, the leader of the secret society OZ, and end up wiping out the Alliance’s pacifist faction. This incident propels OZ onto the center stage of history.
