For fans of Blizzard’s massively popular online shooter Overwatch, the Uprising seasonal event has begun. Following the prelude of a digital comic, the PvE event lasts from now until May 1st. In narrative terms, Uprising details the rise of the character Tracer and her strike team as they fight on King’s Row. Functionally, the event lets players team up for co-op action against enemy AI to unlock new declassified loot boxes and uncover 100 new customization items.
Set seven years prior to the events of Overwatch, Uprising is set in the universe’s “Golden Era” as Tracer is in training. Alongside characters like Torbjörn, Reinhardt, and Mercy, they’ll have to defend King’s Row from an onslaught of vicious robots.
For the event, standard loot boxes are replaced with Uprising loot boxes, all of which contain mementos of earlier Overwatch exploits, from Tracer’s “Cadet Oxton” skins to Mercy’s “Combat Medic Ziegler” and more. Any of the 100 new cosmetic items you unlock in these limited time loot boxes are yours to keep forever.
Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan explained in a developer update that the Uprising event was created as a response to community feedback asking for more holiday-themed and player-v-AI events. The first such holiday event was last year’s Halloween-themed “Junkenstein’s Revenge”, also a PvE horde mode with robots and evil-induced heroes.
