While we here at Operation Rainfall love covering the latest in gaming news and sharing our reviews of titles new and classic, we also just enjoy playing games in our downtime. So with that, sit back, relax, and check out what the oprainfall gaming crew have been up to this week!
This past week, I’ve been continuing my quest of making progress in games I’ve already started, rather than starting various new games I’ve gotten my hands on. Although, I sorta cheated this week and started Final Fantasy VI. However, I have started the game in the past and attempted to get into it, but I didn’t actually own a copy until I just bought the pixel remaster off the eShop. I’ve always been curious about FFVI and wanted to try it out, since obviously I’ve heard good things about it. So far, I’m enjoying playing it but nothing about it has stuck with me or has me absolutely loving the game. I feel like this is one I needed to play back in the day. I played it a ton though, for like three or four days this week, before taking a break. I went from the start, all the way up to the difficulty spike at The Floating Continent. The enemies there were a lot more difficult than I was expecting, I mean I was having no issues at all right before this place. I looked it up online and read that at one point in time it was supposed to be an endgame area supposedly, and that’s the reason for the spike. I don’t know how accurate that is, but there is definitely a significant difficulty spike. I found myself not in the mood for major grinding and running around aimlessly trying to get through here, so I took a break and went back to yet another game I’ve already started.
The next game I decided to pick back up, was Dragon Quest XI, specifically the Definitive Edition port on PS4. Now I’ve played through the vanilla version of DQXI before, well through a good chunk at least of what I’ll refer to as the third story arc. But I never did quite finish it since that part of the game was a huge grind fest. And then the Definitive Edition was released for Switch and I really wanted to see all the new content they added in. Unfortunately, when I initially played the Switch demo I couldn’t stand how the grass would blur in and out as I walked and character faces were often quite blurry as well. I’m not a huge graphics nut, I don’t care too much about them so long as things aren’t glitchy. But after playing the original game on PS4 first and then seeing how blurry and terrible it looked on Switch, I just couldn’t get into it. It was a long time before I finally gave in and bought a PS4 copy after one was released.
I’m really glad I got the Definitive Edition on PS4. I’ve noticed just in the last couple days a few parts where it’s a smidge blurry and not as nice as the original, yet overall it still looks quite a bit better than it did in the Switch demo. I picked it back up this week where I last left off, at Gallopolis. The beginning of DQXI is pretty slow. Nonetheless, I’ve been enjoying playing it again. All of the important story scenes are charming and fun and I love the characters, they all have a lot of personality. I’ve actually made a good bit of progress, I went from Gallopolis all the way up to Phnom Nonh. So I picked up the majority of the remaining main characters, Sylvando, Jade and Rab. I’ve gotten my hands on the Rainbough and I’m now hunting down all the different colored orbs. I’m looking forward to getting past this point and seeing all the new separate character stories and how they end up where they’re at when everyone separates, before you locate and get the party back together again. It’s been a pain getting skill points though, I think I forgot how few you get each time you level up and how it takes quite a few levels to get a good skill unlocked. I think it’s just been a long time since I played the original, and even then, I last spent a good chunk of time in the endgame, I haven’t been at the beginning in so long. Well, except for when I initially started the Definitive Edition. The very beginning though, up until Gallopolis, was really easy and didn’t require much grinding.
Oh, one more thing I was playing throughout this past week was Riichi City. Ever since I got into Riichi City back in early Spring, for that Whale Cup tournament, I now switch between Mahjong Soul and Riichi City depending on whichever one has an event going on. Since I finished Mahjong Soul‘s late summer event a few weeks ago, it was time for Riichi City again. I recently went up in the ranks enough to finally enter the Moon room, kinda like Mahjong Soul‘s Silver ranked room. Also, I got my first non starter character from a free summon ticket they sent out after some maintenance patch the game was down for at some point. I tend to prefer Mahjong Soul for the different tunes and things when you riichi, plus I think they have better emotes to use during matches. But I just like playing either one whenever there’s new cosmetic event stuff to earn. Either way it’s riichi mahjong regardless and both are fun apps. – Jenae
