We here at oprainfall don’t just love video games: we’re big fans of anime, too. So in celebration of the medium, we’re here to give you our thoughts on what we’ve been watching each week as we watch it. Old, new – anything goes.

Mob Psycho 100 III
Last week I mentioned how much I was looking forward to season three of Mob Psycho 100, and I am pleased to say that the first episode did not disappoint. Mob has to fill out a career survey for what he’d like to do in the future, and he’s stumped as to what that is. While everyone else around him has aspirations and ideas for what they’d like to do in high school and beyond, Mob can’t think of a single thing. He’s content and stagnant where he is, and that comes to a head when he, Reigen, and Serizawa need to exorcise a spirit from a hoarder’s home. Turns out the man has weaponized his own fears and complacency, causing everyone around him to lose all motivation and fall asleep. Mob and Serizawa make short work of the spectre, but it leaves both of them shaken because of how “close to home” the encounter was: Serizawa as a recent shut-in, and Mob who fears stagnating. This episode seamlessly broke up the status quo we’ve enjoyed the past two seasons and I’m excited to see how Mob will grow from here. – Leah

Housing Complex C
Picking up from the last episode, the strange events continue to occur; with some residents disappearing and a focus put on moss in the area. The tensions between the foreign workers and some of the elderly residents continue. Kimi tries to diffuse it by saying they should hold an event together with shaved ice. In the meantime, we hear more about some local songs and stories which I’m sure will lead to something later on. One of the foreign workers reveals he’s been hiding bodies of animals that have been randomly appearing at the complex, so Kimi doesn’t get upset. While searching for the suspect regarding the fish and animal bodies, one of the residents disappears. While everyone is gathered, some of the people notice something is off about the shaved ice and while it’s not that surprising, it doesn’t change the disturbing nature of it. While there weren’t any “optical illusions” in this episode, the build up was good. I hope the next episode carries the unease. – Walter

I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss
Started this and caught up with the most current episode. It is an isekai and features a girl being reincarnated as the villainess of an otome game. While it is similar to another series that I also like, with a premise along the same lines, I think it does a decent job differentiating itself. It follows Aileen as she reacts to being thrown aside by the prince. In order to avoid a bad ending for herself, she actually instead chases after the prince’s brother, a demon lord. I like most of the characters and Aileen is very much a character that tries to take care of as much as she can. She does have some allies, even though she has received a bad reputation. I’ve liked this one more than I thought I might. Plus the events of the most recent episode teases that there may be something up with one of the other characters. This is one I think I might keep going with. – Walter

Akiba Maid War
HiDive has been the site that pulls in shows that usually I hear little to nothing about before their premiere. Noticing a show about maid cafes, made me eager to put this on. In case you’re wondering, this is not a slice of life, the opening scene tells you very quickly what you should expect, not to say that there isn’t some comedy thrown in. It is set in 1999 and follows Nagomi who moves to Akihibara with the dream to be a maid. She’s a cheery and somewhat clumsy type of character when she gets there. She arrives at the café, which has a pig theme, along with another new hire named Ranko, who is quite a bit older for a maid. You can tell that some things about the café are kind of off. Things at the café take a turn when a man dressed in the stereotypical otaku outfit asks the manager for dues and the manager has Nagomi go run an errand instead. Ranko decides to go along and they visit a rival maid café to deliver a letter. Things are very much not what Nagomi expects and she is assaulted then saved by Ranko who escalates things. The climax of the episode has them being chased by the rival maids. This scene features a song from one of their co-workers and was not something I was expecting. However, I think it works. I loved the style of the fight and while I was already interested, it got me hooked. This is another one I came into not really sure what to expect, but I’m a fan of it already. – Walter
