Smash 4 was criticized by some for not including a real adventure mode to speak of. Well Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will not be following in Smash 4’s footsteps in this regard, as was announced at the end of today’s Nintendo Direct. There will, in fact, be an adventure mode and it will be called the World of Light!

Details are fairly scant, being more a teaser, but Sakurai did show us a nifty cinematic featuring the cast facing off against some sort of seraphim like creature surrounded by several Master Hands. One by one the fighters seem to get eviscerated by the new enemies beams of light with only Kirby escaping. (Of course it would be Kirby.)

Then we are treated to what looks like actual gameplay of Kirby and other characters exploring a overworld of several different games. Interacting with different elements and getting into battles against spirits embodying the form of the defeated fighters. It seemed to be implied that this will tie into the spirit gameplay mode I mentioned here.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch December 7th, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch.
