After spending 52 straight weeks on the Media Create charts, Animal Crossing: New Leaf is out of the Top 20 in software sales. The game that is so far the highest selling 3DS game in Japan needed one more week on the chart to make it one full year (remember, a year is 52 weeks and one day). Well, it comes up just short of that mark but the game is memorable for having the longest consecutive run on the chart since we started following it.
Another notable milestone comes from the PS Vita, which hit 2,000,000 units sold in the region. The console is struggling to find those games that have the legs to stay on the chart for months at a time but it’s still swinging away, fighting for every sale. Hopefully, it can find that killer app with Tearaway when it releases next month.
From one struggling console to another, the Wii U continues to struggle looking for a killer app of its own. As expected, the Wii series games gave it a decent boost but only for the one week. I said last week that I wasn’t sure how well Mario would do with Super Mario 3D World but don’t count out the plumber. I still think he can move units. Its only a matter of how many, especially with the PS4 around the corner.
In the race for 3,000,000 units sold, Pokemon X & Y and Monster Hunter 4 continue to move closer to the mark. MH4 leads by about 65,000 but is sputtering as it gets closer to the milestone. At the pace both are going, Pokemon X & Y will probably hit the mark first, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends in a bit of a draw.
Some unfortunate news for those hoping for an Exstetra localization. Releasing this past week for both the Vita and 3DS, the RPG was only able to get the Vita port in the Top 20 with 11,376 units sold. 3DS missed by quite a bit. According to the Famitsu charts, which also covers digital sales, the 3DS port of Exstetra barely sold 3,000 units. If you really want to play this game, you will probably have to import the game.
Here’s a few more for those looking to import:
—Akiba’s Trip 2 released this past week to modest returns for both the PS3 and Vita versions. The sequel to the original Akiba’s Trip, the game is an adventure game where the main character attempts to defeat vampires by exposing them to sunlight. This is done by stripping off the clothes of the enemies. If you’re in the market for it, you’ll probably have to import this one as well.
–Over on the 3DS, we have the post-apocalyptic, vehicular combat RPG Metal Max 4: Moonlight Diva. While this is the fourth numbered entry in the series–and the second in four years–the series history actually spans back to the Famicom, where the original Metal Max became an early example of open-ended, non-linear gameplay. So far, only one game has reached the West with Metal Saga on the PS2 coming to North America. The chances of this game coming over are rather low so importing will probably be the way to go. Also, if you’re looking for import-friendly options, both Metal Max 2 and Metal Max 3 were on the region-free Nintendo DS (the Metal Max 2 port was a remaster of the original SNES game).
–Finally, the latest in the OneeChanbara series has released for the PS3. OneeChanbara Z: Kagura with NoNoNo!, which I believe is a PS3 upgrade of the Xbox 360 exclusive from last year, opened with 15,686 units sold. It’s possible that it comes West, since Europe has received localizations of about half of the games in the series, although the last three in the series stayed in Japan.
