This week Famitsu has released some new gameplay details about the upcoming 3DS game, Shin Megami Tensei IV.
Fans of other SMT games such as Persona 3 and 4, Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga, will recognize the “Press Turn System” when it makes its return in Shin Megami Tensei IV.
For those unfamiliar with it, the “Press Turn System” allows both the player and the enemy the ability to take an extra turn in battle, by exploiting the engaged character’s weakness. For instance a player’s character who’s weakness is fire when hit with it, would become dazed allowing the enemy party an extra hit at them. As you can imagine this ads a bit more strategy and depth to an already challenging series of games.
Also revealed in Famitsu is the ability to pay Macca (the SMT universe’s form of currency) to the Ferryman you see after death, so that he may revive your party for a second shot at your last battle.
This is an SMT game.
You will die.
A lot.
Paying the Ferryman for a second chance at a battle as opposed to starting back at the intro screen is a welcomed addition to the franchise, and maybe the other games in the SMT universe will follow suit.
Shin Megami Tensei IV is scheduled for release in Japan later this year.
