Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze had a lot of hype going into the release. But from what critics have been saying, the game is going to be worth the hype. We’re all excited for its release this Friday. And judging by the Media Create numbers, it looks like Japan couldn’t wai…

Wait, what were those numbers again?

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze 35.717

What the hell, Japan?! What the actual hell?!

This is bad. This is really bad. There is no sugar coating this result. No main series Donkey Kong platformer since Donkey Kong Country has sold less than a million copies in Japan (the Game Boy games don’t count since those were just smaller versions of the SNES games), including the Wii’s Donkey Kong Country Returns with just over 1 million. Tropical Freeze looks like it won’t even get to half of that. It doesn’t even look like it will match the numbers for DKC Returns 3D, which were around 320,000.

Where’s that savior list? I need to update it.

  • Sonic Lost World
  • Wii Fit U
  • Wii Party U
  • Wii Sports Club
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Dragon Quest X: Nemureru Yuusha to Michibiki no Meiyuu Online
  • Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Mario Kart 8 (May 29, 2014)
  • Bayonetta 2 (Summer 2014)
  • X (2014)
  • Super Smash Bros. (2014)
  • Hyrule Warriors (2014)

I’m baffled by this. I don’t know what to say. Hopefully, Mario Kart 8 doesn’t tank like that when it releases in May.

Nintendo 3DS XL Black - Media Create | oprainfall

It was a slow week as well on the 3DS side of things for Nintendo. Sales for the hardware fell about 10,000, which drops its Year-to-Date to about half of what is was at this time last year when Animal Crossing really pushed the sales. But it wasn’t as terrible on the software side of things as the 3DS held 13 of the 20 spots. Leading the way for the second week was Dragon Quest Monsters 2 with A-Train 3D (the latest in the vehicle simulation series) in 3rd, Kirby Triple Deluxe in 4th, Yo-kai Watch in 5th, Magi: A New World (the latest from the Magi franchise) in 6th, Puzzle & Dragons Z in 7th, Puyo Puyo Tetris in 8th, and Pokemon X & Y in 10th.

Yo-kai Watch - Media Create | oprainfall

Also of note, Yo-kai Watch continues to be a success for Level-5. It has been reported that the company has shipped 500,000 copies of the game to stores. Hopefully we’ll see this game come to the West soon, especially with Level-5 being vocal about wanting your opinion about it on their Facebook and Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, go let them know that you want it.

PlayStation Vita - Media Create | oprainfall

Other than that, it’s good to see the Vita holding when nothing released for it this week. I’m actually fine with 18,000 being the baseline for the system. That’s definitely progress for the system.

And brace for impact. The PS4 is coming to Japan on Saturday.

Just another headache for Nintendo.

Hahaha Japan dose not like it?!

The Japanese are really hard to please huh?
I would expect the 3ds to fall in numbers because hell, everyone has one. Now we are just waiting for something new to come out.

  • Eric

Releasing a Dragon Quest game will save the Wii U, at least in Japan. I don’t know if anything can help it in North America anymore.

    • Raymond

There is a Dragon quest game on the Wii U in japan. We just don’t know it that much. The only thing that can save the wii U is that people just have to BUY the damn system. Everyone complains that they want this game and that game but how in the hell will they make it if no one is going to buy the system so they know you are interested?

  • MusubiKazesaru

hopefully as far as DK goes it’ll be like SM3DW and sell some more over time than right away once the PS4 buzz dies down a little

  • chris

Mario Kart and Smash are the big ones. If the sales don’t pick up after, nothing will do it. And is anyone really promoting X, Bayonetta 2, or Hyrule Warriors as saviors?

  • Whatever

    @Jeff

This savior joke are no longer funny Jeff and you sound more like a bias broken record than an actual editor

Sure SM3DW didn’t start brightly but it sold very well over time

So quit your Nintendooomed jokes Jeff because they’re bias and no longer funny

    • Jeff Neuenschwander

First off, SM3DW has not sold well. It is below average for a high profile, universally acclaimed game.
Second, when I started the “Savior” list, it was a list of games that I thought had a chance at getting the Wii U off the ground. So far, none of them have done so. It’s not really Nintendoomed and more frustration with Japan and trying to figure out what it would take to get the system to sell in the region.

The author of this article forgot that Vita and Wii U hardware sales were up a bit, and there’s one new software release (that is the PSP port of the visual novel Akaya Akashiya Ayakashi no, developed by HaccaWorks and ported by Asgard; that visual novel is also adapted to manga) in the top 50. Anyway, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze won against Artdink’s Let’s Go on the A-Train 3D (a train simulator).
Nintendo should think about worldwide release for its future high-profile game releases like with Pokémon X and Y.
