Lagiacrus and Rathalos

#1. Rathian

Rathian

One of the oldest and most familiar monsters in the Monster Hunter universe, Rathian was a shoe-in for the top spot. Debuting in the original Monster Hunter on PlayStation 2, Rathian has been a staple in the series, appearing in every game alongside her male counterpart, Rathalos. While very little in Rathian’s repertoire has changed since her debut, she is still a dangerous and crafty opponent. From her demeanor, Rathian could be considered a basic fire-breathing dragon (though Rathian is not a dragon by Monster Hunter standards, if you want to get technical). As such, hunters can expect various attacks with her claws, tail and fire breath. Certain attacks with her tail can poison hunters, as well, making her all the more threatening. Rathian is also fiercely protective of her eggs, and will relentlessly pursue hunters who try to steal them. This makes quests that involve delivering wyvern eggs even more difficult (Poached Wyvern Eggs event quest, am I right?).

———-

So there you have it. Granted, a top ten out of a roster of only 16 monsters is not exactly the most grand of lists, but there’s always the next game. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate features 50 new and returning monsters, which could make a follow-up list much more interesting, and difficult, to put together. How about you? What are some of your favorite monsters from the Monster Hunter universe?
