It seems like the guys at Valve have the whole Greelight approval process figured, as shown through the past weeks and months with approvals of no less than 25 games and applications, including two 100-approval weeks. And leading the way is one of our most anticipated games, Two Brothers from Ackk Studios. But it is far from the only game on the list. Here’s a few to look out for:
Developed by TORaIKI, 99 Spirits has already been released in Western regions thanks to the efforts of small publisher Fruitbat Factory through Indiegogo. The game focuses on the Japanese myth of Tsukumogami, in which everyday objects come to life on their 100th birthday, and has been called “strangely addictive” by some of those that have experienced the game.
Developed by Gamesbymo, A.N.N.E is, as the creators put it, “Metroidvania meets Space shooting!” The game went on Kickstarter earlier this year, raising $100,000 for the project. Along with Steam, the game will also be coming to PSN, Wii U, and OUYA–although these versions will release later since they didn’t hit stretch goals to accelerate development for those systems. You can also check out our experience with the game at PAX East.
Developed by Basilisk Games, this is the third and final game in the Eschalon trilogy. From the Steam page:
Eschalon: Book III brings the award-winning RPG trilogy to a climatic end as you seek to uncover the mystery of your past, the secrets of the Crux stones, and who the Orakur really are. You’ll traverse miles of virtual wilderness and dungeons, filled with secrets and danger, in an unparalleled role-playing experience designed to feel like a true pen-and-paper RPG.
Developed by Sakura River Interactive, Fading Hearts is an adventure game that presents quite a bit of freedom to the player. The game has been well-received by critics and will see improvements from publisher Counter Arts.
Developed by AwesomeGamesStudio, Oozi: Earth Adventure is an action platformer that harkens back to the days of old school arcade-style platformers. The game has been well-received by critics, including us. Check out Angela Hinck’s review of the game by clicking here.
Developed by Team Pixel Pi, Pulse is a unique first-person game. You play as a blind person who needs to navigate through the game using sound, similar to echolocation. And while an object may be okay, your “vision” will be distorted by memories to create a surreal experience.
Developed by Ackk Studios, Two Brothers is an action-adventure that harkens back to the days of 8- and 16-bit games, such as Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy and GBC. Seriously, what else can we say about this game? Check out the multiple interviews we’ve done with the team: Jonathan talking with Andrew Allanson, Jared talking with the Ackk Studios team at PAX East, and the Podcast team interviewing the Brian and Andrew Allanson. Also be sure to check out our preview.
A new Kickstarter that has already surpassed its original goal of $12,001 and has reached $50,000 with 13 days left to donate. Here’s a quick blurb from the Steam page:
You play as Petula, an unemployed, emotionally charged, ill-tempered, otherwise average young woman. With the royal army hot on their heels, the heroes have made their way to your village where they begin scavenging for supplies in everyone’s homes. After you confront them for stealing your pendant, they rush off to continue their quest, giving you a quest of your own to retrieve it.
Traditional RPGs are usually well remembered for their unique battle systems, level grinding and vibrantly epic story. Naturally, being a bystander to said story doesn’t lend itself to these conventions. On the other hand, freeing ourselves from these crutches allows us to focus on unique experiences that keep the gameplay fresh and fun.
