I had the pleasure to see firsthand a completely new upcoming title from Grimm Bros called Dragon Fin Soup, a roguelike set in a twisted fairy tale land where Little Red Riding Hood is an angry, rage-powered alcoholic who goes into a berserker frenzy. Yes, this isn’t for you Disney fans who think fairy tales are all cutesy and sweet. This hearkens back to old-school dark fable madness. And it looks wonderful.
I was lucky enough to get to chat with Ash Monif, CEO of Grimm Bros. Though a new team, members of Grimm Bros have 14 or more years of combined experience in the industry. According to Monif, there will be a couple of different ways to play Dragon Fin Soup. First, there will be short, episodic chapters ranging from 10 to 15 minutes long. These consist of all sorts of missions, such as fetch quests, monster hunts or seemingly mundane missions complicated by specific rules and regulations. There will also be long story quests that take dozens of hours to complete.
Though the game is still in early alpha, Grimm Bros has plans for making it an immersive universe incorporating other twisted takes on classic fairy-tale characters from dozens of pantheons. From what I could see of the game, I’m excited. I wish Grimm Bros the best of luck when they eventually bring their game to Kickstarter.
