UPDATE: After some initial disparity regarding whether The Battle Pentagram was for PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita, it seems the mystery has been solved. While Famitsu claimed the game was being developed for the PS3, Dengeki reported it was being developed for the Vita. In addition to screenshots suggesting that Dengeki was correct, Famtisu has now confirmed that the game is in fact coming to the Vita, and that they erroneously reported that the game was coming to the PS3.
The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has revealed that Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Battle Pentagram is being developed for the PlayStation 3. The game is being developed by Artdink and published by Namco Bandai. The Battle Pentagram will be a 3D action game with two distinctly different modes of gameplay. During the day, you get to converse and form bonds with the Puella Magi. During the nighttime portions of the game, you will fight witches, which will also affect the bond level you have with your partners.
So far, the usual suspects have been confirmed to appear in the game, and each has a specific fighting style reflecting the abilities they exhibited in the anime. Akemi Homura fights with firearms and has the ability to manipulate time. Tomoe Mami uses guns and ribbon magic, giving her a long-distance advantage. Kaname Madoka wields light arrows and has the advantage that when she’s in trouble, Kyubey will come to her aid. Miki Sayaka uses swords and is best at close range, but she has high mobility and attack speed. And last but not least, Sakura Kyoko sports a spear for short to mid-ranged attacks.
According to Famitsu, Puella Magi Madoka Magica will be released in Japan sometime this winter. Naturally, there’s no news yet on whether or not we’ll see this game outside of Japan. However if you’re a Madoka Magica fan you can still get excited about the upcoming third movie and check out one of the recent trailers.
