Funimation Entertainment has posted the English-subtitled trailer for Wolf Children, the latest feature film by critically acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda. The film originally released in Japan last July.

Hosoda’s works include select Digimon Adventure short films, an experimental Louis Vuitton commercial Superflat Monogram, the sixth One Piece movie, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Summer Wars — both of which were praised internationally and elevated him to auteur status.

You can watch the trailer below:

Wolf Children situates 13 years of life and begins with a fateful and fairy tale-like engagement between the college student Hana and a wolf-man. They would marry and ultimately bear children: a daughter called Yuki, named after the snow; and a son called Ame, named after the rain. The sudden death of her husband brings Hana and her children to flee from the city and live in a rural town, where the majority of the film is set.

The trailer boasts numerous awards and accolades from various film festivals around the world, promising a masterful demonstration of visual and narrative artistry, and smiles for all spectators’ faces. The character designs are consistently animated on model, the visuals and mise-en-scene look as beautiful and atmospheric as the rest of Hosoda’s directorial endeavors, and the continuing collaborations between Hosoda and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto show no staleness in their ability to craft great looking characters under such simple designs.

There will be joy, laughter, and the feels...
As expected from the master: So many feels already…

Wolf Children is planned for select showings in theaters, and will hit home video in the near future. Starting on March 9th, the film will be screened as part of the New York International Children’s Film Festival, and will follow up with a Q&A session hosting director Mamoru Hosoda himself.

His previous film Summer Wars has also been screened at this particular festival, in addition to its showing at select theaters prior to home release.
