Brian Provinciano from VBlank Entertainment has announced that Retro City Rampage, the 8-bit open-world parody adventure, will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS. The game is currently available on WiiWare for Nintendo Wii, PSN for PlayStation 3 and Vita, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam for Microsoft Windows. The game received glowing reviews throughout the gaming press, including one of our reviewers when he said “its humor and style make it shine above lots of other games.”

According to Provinciano, getting the game to work on the 3DS took a hefty amount of developing work, due to working around its lower resolution, dual screens, and less powerful processor. All of the same content from the other versions are still intact, including the new “Retro+ Enhanced Graphics mode”, which doubles the colors and adds dynamic shadows in the game; but missions have been designed to run on a zoomed in camera to best perform for the system. The bottom screen is a map screen, HUD, and inventory screen all in one that also shows dialogue.

Here’s what it looks like below:

The game runs 2D like in the other platforms, but Provinciano was not opposed to making it 3D if it didn’t take too much work. A simple conversion for sidescrollers would only require separating backgrounds and foreground layers from each other. But in Retro City‘s case, where all the objects are cube-shaped and the camera is top-down, it would require making a new rendering altogether with 3D objects and a camera angle people can be pleased with. Perhaps in a new game, we may see him tackle 3D, but 2D is the best we can get for now with Retro City Rampage.

The game will be playable at Nintendo’s PAX Prime booth in Seattle, and it will be available on the 3DS eShop for the holiday season.
