If Tetsuya Nomura had his way, Final Fantasy XV might have become the first musical Final Fantasy ever, joining the ranks of other musical RPGs like Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure and Antiphona no Seikahime: Tenshi no Gakufu Op.A. (No, Eternal Sonata does not count.)
In an interview, Nomura reveals himself to be a bit of a cinephile. Recently, Nomura saw the movie Les Misérables, and, like most of us, was moved by the performances of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. The very next day, he went to work and tried to convince everyone to change Final Fantasy XV into a musical. Unfortunately (?), he was unable to convince the higher-ups at Square Enix to go along with his vision.
Game developers have always been swayed by the most mundane of things to put into their games. Story has it that Shigeru Miyamoto was inspired to create Wii Fit after he bought a new bathroom scale. Douglas Wilson created Johann Sebastian Joust to prove that moving really slowly is awesome. Creating a game that doubles as a musical is not out of the realm of the reasonable. Warren Spector gave a go at it only recently. Still, the idea of a Final Fantasy musical game does feel a bit off. Or do people who think so simply lack vision? What do you think?
