Birthday Pinata Feature Image

This week’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons column has a lot of surprises in it. From surprises about coffee to catchphrases to even a birthday party and fixing a friendship…I could never quite tell what was going to happen next in game. This game has a lot of heart to it, and it amazes me that there is still something new to discover all the time even though I have been playing every day since January 1.

This week, I also moved my island over to the Nintendo Switch 2! The game runs so much snappier now and loads so much quicker, that it makes me realize just how ‘modern’ this new console is. It is definitely the best way to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons now, in my opinion.

There is also a Bug Off coming up…

Animal Crossing | Brewster saying thank you to me.

Hugh visited me again, today! It was awesome to see him poke around…even though I haven’t really renovated my home recently.

Other than that, I stopped by Brewster’s Cafe for a cup of coffee. Somehow, Brewster gave me a cup that was rich and balanced with “subtle floral notes”, whatever that is. I don’t drink coffee in real life, and so I am not quite sure how it can taste like flowers.

When I left today, Brewster stopped me at the door and gave me a gift: a cup with a saucer. I definitely wasn’t expecting that, and I am not sure why he gave me it, but I am very thankful for it.

Animal Crossing | Building a stone pathway to the Able Sisters' Shop.

I met Tad today. His catchphrase is “sluuuurp”. Nope, not letting him come to my island.

Today, I focused my time on building a stone pathway upwards from the connection between the museum and the town hall towards the Able Sister’s shop. It took a lot longer than I was expecting to clear all the flowers away to build the stone path, but it is nice to have a little more organization to how my island looks.

Oh, and Tybalt said that it would be quicker for him to move than to clean up. Wouldn’t tidying up be part of the moving process, anyway?…

I don’t get these islanders, sometimes.

Animal Crossing | Gonzo talking about how Tutu's home smells like baked ziti.

I missed cooking regularly when I am not traveling around, and Gonzo’s comment tonight reminded me about that.

Not a lot happened today, other than me digging up more fossils and banging on rocks to try to make money to help pay down my home loan.

Animal Crossing | K.K. Slider plays music at night.

Tonight, Hugh and I listened to K.K. Slider play K.K. Metal as a “Dealer’s Choice”. I am constantly surprised about how K.K. Slider can cross multiple genres and still push out bangers after bangers into the world.

He gave me a bootleg after the show of his music (is it still a bootleg if the artist is giving it to me?…), and I plopped it into my home record player to enjoy in the future!

Animal Crossing | Learning the smirking reaction from Cephalobot.

Today, I paid down 30,000 more Bells off of my home loan! I am below 200,000 Bells owed now.

I also caught a snail off of the rock outside the library. I know it’s not much to brag about, but unfortunately the museum already had one. I ended up just selling it off to Timmy and Tommy for a few more Bells.

Finally, I learned a new reaction today in the rain! I learned smirking from Celphalobot. Weirdly enough though, he doesn’t have a mouth and so I don’t quite know how he can smirk.

I know I said it already once this week, but these islanders in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Hugh is upset over Tutu and snacks.

Sometimes, friends fight.

Tonight, Hugh confided in me while upset that he got into a fight with Tutu over snacks, and he was worried about if Tutu hates him now. All he wants to do is share snacks with her again. He asked me if I would deliver her a present so he can have his snack buddy back, again.

Of course, I said yes.

I stopped by Tutu’s place, and Tutu opened up with “we haven’t talked in a month”. That automatically made me feel like a bad friend, especially since I do play every day. I handed her Hugh’s gift, and she opened it to find that it was a tee and towel, and she immediately changed into it once I turned my back to her.

She realized that Hugh was really bothered by what happened, and she said that would make it up to him by buying him some of his favorite snacks! She promised that they “DEFINITELY” will make up.

It’s been six months, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons still manages to find ways to surprise me every day with the heart and warmth that the characters bring to this world.

Blowing out a birthday cake with Tybalt, Hugo, and Hazel looking on.

Today is apparently my character’s birthday in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! I don’t even remember setting it in the game at any point, but I must have when I started up the game.

The moment I popped in today, Hazel stopped by and took me immediately to her house to celebrate with Hugh and Tybalt. I blew out a cake with candles, she gave me a gift, I swung repeatedly at a pinata (why did no one else get a turn?), and cupcakes came out. Finally, we all just hung out together for a bit.

Afterwards, I stopped by the plaza and K.K. Slider played K.K. Birthday for me and Cephalobot! He gave me a copy of the song afterwards, and I was happy to see small birthday letters written by other islanders to me. Finally, I stopped by Brewster’s Cafe, and I got a special birthday cup of coffee from him…but I still had to pay 200 Bells for it.

All in all, a great in-game birthday for my character!
