I have reviewed many Shmups this past year and I thought I was going to take a break from the genre. That was until eastasiasoft revealed Waifu Uncovered. This reminded me of those Deep Space Waifu games on Steam, but the gameplay and artwork looked much better. I’m never one to pass on something that looks crass and lewd, so I decided to dive into this bad boy. Let’s find out if this waifu stripping adventure is worth your coin.
Much like everything else in this game, the story is complete nonsense. You must save all the lovely waifus from the evil alien invaders! To do this you will have to blast the hordes of alien invaders that include but are not limited to: UFOs, Flying Poo, Ghosts and what I’m pretty sure is a pair of testicles. As you blast away the enemy hordes, ninja stars will fall. You will need to collect them to strip the waifu and allow the stage to progress. You will be greeted at the end of each level with a zany boss. I won’t spoil the names of these here, but let’s just say I laughed out loud more than once during my playthrough.
While the game is pretty straightforward there are a few different ships for you to choose from depending on your play style. These range from fast ships with lots of obtainable upgrades to ships that are very powerful but are limited in the upgrades you can receive. The upgrades are obtained during each stage and will drop just like the ninja stars. There is also a short section at the front of each stage after the first one where upgrades and such will drop on most kills for a short while. This is a very good time to power up your craft. You have to pay close attention to these drops, since some of them will actually downgrade your craft.
Waifu Uncovered offers a few different play modes. Normal mode will have you play through 7 stages freeing the gals from their alien menaces. You will have to start out playing in censored mode, which leaves the girls slightly covered even when fully stripped. Think Senran Kagura here. After completing a few stages you will unlock uncensored mode, which will have the girls fully naked, nips and all. No matter which you choose, upon completing the game the art gallery will unlock both versions for your viewing pleasure.
Other gameplay options include Arcade mode, which is just a bit harder than normal mode best I can tell, and One Finger Mode. This mode will allow you to fly and shoot baddies with only one finger on the Switch’s touch screen. This will leave your other hand free to do other things, I guess? Anyways, this mode seemed like a novelty to me, but it’s there for those that wish to explore it.
The music found in the game is pretty basic. It’s happy and upbeat and fits the game’s tone really well. The sound effects are your basic blasts and explosions you’d find in any other Shmup, but the girls make some sounds as their clothing is being blasted away. This is one of those times where a game doesn’t do anything remarkable in the sound department, but what’s here gets the job done.
Waifu Uncovered is a fun and simple shooter with a very unique theme. My only real complaint about the game is your hit box is entirely too big for a game of this type. This makes arcade mode basically impossible without some good luck. For the low price of $6.99 there is a lot of fun to be had here, with some replay value if you want to unlock the extra ships and such. Fans of ecchi type content will feel right at home here and should snag this up ASAP. Anyone curious about this title should just not take it too seriously. It certainly doesn’t take itself serious, and there nothing wrong with that. We all need a good laugh these days, for sure.
