A report from earlier this morning in The Wall Street Journal’s Tech section asserts that Nintendo is looking to release two new versions of the Nintendo Switch at some point in the next year. While still unconfirmed by Nintendo, these new hardware revisions may arrive as quickly as this summer. Of the two models, the first is listed as being a budget version based on the current model. It will reportedly have the vibration feature stripped and is described as being a possible successor to the 3DS.
The second model is described as being one with “enhanced features targeted at avid video gamers”. No additional details were given for this model, but the article did go on to suggest that the new hardware revisions would likely make an appearance at E3 2019.
MY TAKE: The current Switch hardware is two years old now, but this pales in comparison to the 3DS’ eight year run. Throughout those eight years, we’ve seen six variations of the 3DS’ hardware pop up, some of them budget focused and others touting extra processing power. With all of this in mind, I find it perfectly plausible that Nintendo could be moving away from the 3DS and revamping its existing Switch hardware.
