Pokémon Crystal has been announced for 3DS Virtual Console to be released worldwide January 26th, 2018. In addition to wireless connectivity to fellow 3DS re-issues of Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Silver for trading (and the latter two for battling as well), they will also connect to Pokémon Bank and Transporter for Generation VII transfers.
Of special interest to this release is the incorporation of the GS Ball item, which allows players to obtain the Mythical Pokémon Celebi in-game with no add-ons or events.
The 2001 Game Boy Color classic completes the trilogy of Generation II Pokémon games, including Pokémon Gold and Silver re-released this past September. Pokémon Crystal introduced a few upgrades over the previous entries that carried on to the franchise’s future, including a female trainer avatar, the Battle Tower gauntlet, and (in Japan only via an adapter) online connectivity.
Digital pre-loads in Japan begin January 8th. The region will also have access to a limited edition retail package on January 26th that includes a download code, stickers, and a GBC cartridge magnet. That same day, Europe will get the Pikachu-themed New 2DS XL, with no North American release confirmed.
