I’m not a fan of FPS games in general, but I am fascinated by post apocalyptic monstrosities, and Metro Exodus seems to have those aplenty. I admit I’m not familiar with the series, but the footage from Microsoft’s conference had a lot of bells and whistles. Combat appeared quite dynamic, as the hero made use of various weapons, such as guns, crossbows and more, to fight off mutant hordes.
The creatures shown initially appeared to resemble giant rats or bat creatures, and they were quite menacing and ferocious, but easily put down. Later on, as the trailer moved into the outside environment, there were what appeared to be large, but otherwise normal, wolves. I appreciated how this segment showcased reusing ammunition (the character fired a crossbow bolt into the beast and then retrieved it and reloaded it). The game seems steeped in realistic mechanics, despite the fantastical post apocalyptic setting.
The footage culminated with a fight against a giant mutated bear beast, who took bolts and kept on kicking. Finally, it ends with you getting a helping hand from a teammate on a train. Overall, Metro Exodus looks compelling, even if it is a FPS exclusive for the XBox One. It’s slated to release sometime in 2018.
