7. Final Fantasy Tactics
Another cult classic, this was the first ever attempt at turning the Final Fantasy franchise into a strategy RPG. The game offered an in-depth story with numerous plot twists, challenging gameplay and a unique take on the world of Final Fantasy, which caught many gamers’ attention. I’m sure various cameos from Final Fantasy VII characters also helped the game become a fan-favorite. The gameplay inspired a handful of other Final Fantasy Tactics games released on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, respectively.
6. Vagrant Story
Squaresoft’s role-playing, dungeon crawler game enters our list at No 6. Its deep and intuitive story, as well as its unique battle system that balances the elements of strategy incredibly well, attracted so many of us into what we believe is an unforgettable gaming experience. The comic-book style graphics were a refreshing change, and its outstanding soundtrack really drew us into the world of the game.
5. Final Fantasy VIII
Following the HUGE impact that Final Fantasy VII made (more on that game later), FF VIII had a lot to live up to. However, it seems to be the case that it divides many a Final Fantasy fan. Praised for its involving story of love and heroism, it’s also criticized for its gameplay and battle system, which was wildly different compared to the previous game in the series. Having said that, there are many a Final Fantasy fan out there that claim it to be their favourite of all time, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We feel it deserves its spot at No 5.
