This week was a major shakeup in Animal Crossing: New Horizons for me: one of my islanders left, and who knows who she is going to be replaced with.

Hellos and goodbyes are a fact in life, and I have a hard enough time doing them in real life, let alone in a video game. Yes, I can stop her, but I had resolved internally that I would let whoever asks me to leave next actually do so. The game clearly intends for islanders to flow in and out of your island life, and for once I needed to let this gameplay mechanic actually play out as I head into my eighth month of this weekly column.

It still doesn’t make it any easier, and I wonder who will show up to replace her that is actually acceptable to me and the vibe of my island…

Animal Crossing | Clothing Designs at the Able Sisters.

I fell down the clothing customization design proverbial rabbit hole today.

There are simply so many different designs and colors and patterns, and the creativity of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons community never stops amazing me. I ended up picking through a lot of them before I settled on a Kirby themed top since I am really excited about Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World Upgrade Pack releasing on August 28th. I haven’t actually played the original game yet, and so I have been holding off for it to come out first.

Animal Crossing | Becky announces that she is leaving.

It is fitting that yesterday was all about fashion and fashion trends…Since Becky decided to leave Renassia.

She said she wanted to leave because she couldn’t keep up with all the latest fashion trends by staying here, and she doesn’t want to stay in one place forever. I couldn’t keep pushing everyone to stay who doesn’t want to stay with me on my island, and I felt guilty about it last time this happened. So, I ended up asking her to please write to me.

Of course, I know what it is like trying to keep in contact with people who live on the opposite side of the world from you, and so I don’t know quite how well it will go.

Animal Crossing | Becky packing up to move and crying.

I stopped by Becky’s home today to say my final goodbyes, and she was glad I did so. Becky said she would miss me, and she hopes she can embrace whatever change comes to her on a new island.

And of course, she will never forget Renassia or her friends here.

It is…surprisingly emotional to say goodbye to someone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And I’m worried: who will come next? Who will come to my tent and say “I want to move into Renassia!”, and will they be a good fit with everyone else?

And…who will want to leave next?

Cephalobot speaking multiple languages.

Well, Deena visited my island’s tent, held a lollipop, and offered me their school uniform with ribbon if I win a game. I was less than impressed with my first interaction with them, and so I passed on inviting them to stay with me on Renassia.

I ended up just hanging out with K.K. Slider, who when I told him that I was feeling downbeat, played K.K. Western for me and Cephalobot. It also turns out that Cephalobot is a polyglot! He has been apparently working on his Spanish since I last saw him, but I am not quite sure why he chose to greet me in Italian then…

Doing a drawing with Redd at the fireworks event.

One of oprainfall‘s other writers, Jenae, told me that I should make sure to play on a Sunday night during August. And she was definitely right, since there were fireworks!

I was not expecting to be handed head gear with glowing stars on it to wear, or to be drawing prizes from Redd’s games. I first drew a 16 to win myself some plain cotton candy and then I drew a number 3 to win some fountain firework! It was a lot of fun to see everyone all together at once, and it reminded me a lot of how this year’s series started with fireworks on January 1st.

Selfishly, I also wondered if Becky would have enjoyed it too and if she has a fireworks display on her new Animal Crossing: New Horizons island.

Getting mail telling me that I earned 96 Bells in interest.

I checked my mail today, and I discovered that I earned 96 Bells in interest from my bank deposits over the last month. It’s not a lot of Bells, to be honest, but it’s still something!

Other than that, I donated the Twinkling Painting to the Renassia Museum, and Blathers took it wholeheartedly. I then went fossil hunting and hitting rocks looking for a money rock. It wasn’t a lot, but not everything has to be a daily festival!

Ugly room design with random wallpaper, flooring, and a rug from Saharah.

A while ago, I got a new room and all I’ve done so far with that space is put in a jukebox.

With Saharah coming to visit today, I bought a mysterious wallpaper, a mysterious flooring, and a large rug. Saharah promised me that my eyes will grow “wide, like mouth of yawning beluga whale.” Aside from Saharah making the craziest similes possible, she clearly does not correlate the patterns she was passing out, as they all clashed into a super freaking ugly room. I kept trying to realign the rug in the room to make it work, and it just really doesn’t at all.

Hopefully, next week, I can decorate it better. You definitely don’t know quite what you’re going to get from Saharah, and this just proves it!
