The old saying is that it takes 21 days – or three weeks – to make something be a new habit, and there is no reason why Animal Crossing: New Horizons should be excluded from that.
I find myself falling into a habit of at least a few minutes of Animal Crossing: New Horizon everyday already, even if all I want to do is go to bed or do nothing else. I think that means that I’ve developed a new gaming habit already?
Now if I could only get back into Ring Fit Adventure like that…Hmmm…
Anyway, this is how this past week went in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
You can check out last week’s column here.
January 22
As it seems to frequently happen in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, my best-laid plans often go awry.
I was going around picking my crops and planting more pumpkins when I found a book on the ground. Curious, I picked it up…and found out that someone lost a book! I started talking to the other islanders, and Tutu told me it belonged to Gonzo.
So naturally, I tracked him down and then had to talk to him TWICE in order to try to return the book to him. He was thrilled, and he gave me a clothing item in return!
Other than that, today was fairly uneventful. I gave away a dung beetle as a gift to Tutu as a thank you for helping me to return the book, and I bought a new zen cushion for my home. Onto tomorrow!
January 23
Redd came to visit, and he set up a little boat at the top of my island! He is selling both real and forged art now, and it is apparently on me to pick out what is real every day – and I only get to take one piece home.
It’s funny, I recognize Ōtani Oniji III in the Role of the Servant Edobei by 東洲斎 写楽 (Tōshūsai Sharaku) almost anywhere – and I especially could recognize that this is a poorly done fake. Redd is trying to pull a fast one on me!
Thankfully, I found a real sculpture to buy, and it is being sent to my home now for inclusion in my museum as I write this.
January 24
On my island, there is a section that is sectioned off from everything else by the river that runs through it. If you’re on the south side where my home and all the other buildings are, you cannot get to it without using a pole to launch yourself across.
That all changes today.
I have started to build a red zen bridge to make even more of my island accessible to everyone, even if they do not have a pole to use. I even threw in the first 100,000 bells to pay for it!
January 25
In my quest to pay for my brand-new bridge, I went hunting for money today. I dug up (and sold) a fossil, and…
I found a money tree that I had planted and forgotten about some time ago.
This proved incredibly useful. I shook down the money and then turned around and donated that money (and an extra 20k bells) to the bridge fund. I then chopped the tree down fully and dug it up, so that I could have more wood to build tools with in the future.
Less than 100k bells left, now!

When I first got my Nintendo DSi XL at Toys R’ Us, I was obsessed with Flipnote Studio and Flipnote Hatena. I love creativity, and seeing the crazy creations people would make with the limited tools they had available to them constantly blew my mind – and it didn’t get any better once Flipnote Studio 3D was released for the Nintendo 3DS.
Community creativity is one of the hallmarks that Nintendo simply does better than anyone else, and so I knew I was a goner when I randomly discovered the Custom Designs Portal at the Able Sisters today. There are SO many cool and creative designs created all over the world that I can just download and use at a whim, and I spent around an hour just looking at everything and trying things out and thinking to myself ‘What can I contribute?…’ to the community at large.
Next week’s outfit for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is going to definitely be a custom theme that I’ve downloaded!
January 27
Sometimes, not a lot happens, and I find myself not playing for very long in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And that’s honestly okay.
Today, I learned the Curiosity expression from Tutu, sold weeds to Leif, and Hazel (my first islander!) came over to hang out.
I showed off my home to her, and it was fun, but it didn’t last long before I saved and quit for the day.
January 28
Whereas I didn’t play much yesterday, I definitely played quite a bit tonight.
This was a long, draining day for me, and so all I did when I got home was fish. And fish. And fish.
I caught a bunch of fish that I already had, I caught my first Olive Flounder, and…I caught a tire. Why are there tires in the rivers and streams on my island?
Lots of carp, koi and bitterling otherwise.
It was oddly relaxing to just run all over and catch everything that pops up honestly. And it was a somewhat nice ending to this week of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Did you pick up Animal Crossing: New Horizons last week? What did you accomplish, if anything?
