Dark Gathering
I went into this one without really knowing anything about it. It follows Keitaro, a college student who has links with the supernatural. He has gone through a traumatic experience in the past with the paranormal along with his childhood friend Eiko. As he attempts to become part of society again after becoming a shut-in, he ends up becoming a tutor. His student ends up being Eiko’s younger cousin, Yayoi. While she is very intelligent, there are a number of things peculiar about her. Immediately, she knows Keitaro has some sort of connection with the supernatural and has him accompany her to haunted locations as a lure. While there are some comedic moments, this series is definitely more of a horror. Yayoi is very much not a normal child and we find out what her motives are for searching for spirits. Eiko is character who is surprisingly very supportive of Yayoi’s pursuits while also still being close to Keitaro. That being said, there are moments where the two seem off. I wasn’t sure what to have expected when starting, but I think this will be one I’ll follow this season. – Walter

Yohane the Parhelion: Sunshine in the Mirror
While I didn’t come into this one blind, I wouldn’t say I’m the most familiar with the Love Live! Sunshine!! as a whole. I think for the most part it would be better to know some of the original, but you probably could start it fine without knowing. I caught up to the most recent episode and I think the first episode was kind of weak. While it sets up Yohane’s character and the town, I would say the main highlight of that episode was probably her song. If you like the music in Love Live! you probably are going to like the ones in this series too. The opening theme has really grown on me. The second episode was a bit of an improvement as they brought in more characters and a bit more going on. One thing that kind of throws me off are some pieces of technology that I wouldn’t expect. There was one in the most recent episode that surprised me. There were quite a few things I wasn’t expecting in that one though. I would say that it was the best one so far. I feel that I can’t really try and guess what’s going to happen and I think that’s kind of a plus. I am curious to see what else they throw into this one. – Walter
