NIS America released SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy a short while ago and when I reviewed the game I found it simple but a lot of fun. I’ve had a chance to check out the three recently released DLC fighters for the game and have decided to share my thoughts about them. Let’s see if these contestants are worth their $4.99 each asking price.
The three fighters in question here are Thief Arthur from Square Enix’s Million Arthur. Her backstory is that one day she snuck into Camelot to steal some treasure and ended up obtaining Excalibur instead. Certainly not the most regal character but she is always willing to help people out, which makes her very endearing. As she awakens in Kukri‘s domain she is pretty pissed there is no treasure. Kukri‘s lack of remorse for his actions makes her determined to make him pay!
As you would expect Thief Arthur is a pretty fast fighter. She has a rope swing which allows her to travel across the stage quickly through the air, and her ability to double jump makes it easier for her to evade some attacks. She has a couple throwing daggers for a ranged attack, and using Whirl Air mixed with the Catch and Barrage Climax Move is a match ending one two punch!
The next fighter is Skullomania. His real name is Saburo Nishikoyama and he first appeared in Street Fighter EX. More recently he was seen in Arika’s Fighting EX Layer. Just like Terry, he has been gender swapped and is now a female. This is pretty jarring to him at first, but like any true hero he shakes it off and presses forward. The moveset here is pretty much exactly would you found in Street Fighter EX, but of course made much simpler here. Its very easy to combo the Skullo head with a dive and there is a really great throw called the Skullo Tkatchyov as well. Both of the finishers are close range attacks but there’s a really humorous one as Skullomania stops to sit down in the middle of her combo!
Our last fighter is the mysterious Miss X! OK, maybe she’s not very mysterious, it’s actually Iori Yagami in a sailor dress. This time however the character is fully gender bent unlike in SNK Gals’ Fighters where they were very masculine. Special moves here mostly chain together which makes for some powerful quick combos with a decent amount of power. Throw in some flashy finishers and Miss X is one of the most well balanced fighters in the game. This character is the only DLC character to have multiple costumes and voice sets. The second costume is the gender bent Iori is a cute shorts outfit while the other is the more masculine appearance of the standard outfit from SNK Gals’ Fighters. The voice sets included with this DLC contain two sets the feminine outfits and two for the masculine one.
All three of the characters here come with unique theme music. Thief Arthur and Miss X have two pieces of music while Skullomania has a remixed version of his classic Street Fighter EX theme. I thought all of these themes were fantastic, though I am quite biased when it comes to Skullomania’s theme since its one of my all time favorites. I actually set it to my menu music as soon as I heard it and it will likely remain there for a long time to come.
I have to say I feel like the $5 price tag on each character isn’t really too high, like most would think. You get three solid fighters, extra backgrounds and unique poses for portrait mode, theme music and even some story. I think Thief Arthur was my personal favorite out of the three since I loved her fast combos and catchy theme music, but the other two were very fun to play with as well. If you own SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy you should certainly consider getting all three of these characters. They add even more flair and crazy to a game already filled with both, and it’s all the better for it!
