Hey there boys and girls! Welcome to the pre-PAX West Nintendo Download! Though I’m busy packing and making final preparations for covering that event with my colleague Chris Melchin, that still leaves a little time for my weekly ritual. This week has the release of an indie gem I’m very excited about, some interesting looking digital games, sales and more. So let’s get started, shall we?
I can’t properly express to you how excited I am by The Messenger. The first trailer I ever saw got my interest, and after playing it at E3, I knew this had the potential to be the next Shovel Knight. It’s that good. This mix of 8 and 16 bit action, combined with humor, challenge and lots and lots of ninjas is like the Ninja Gaiden I always wanted. Stay tuned for more details about the game, but in the meantime be sure to check out why it has me so hyper. This next game I’m not so familiar with, other than the fact it was on Steam first. Into the Breach has the last surviving humans piloting mechs to fight gigantic beasts. If that reminds you of Pacific Rim, then we’re on the same wavelength. Better yet? It is a tactical grid based experience with juicy digital art. I personally will be checking that one out sooner than later. Finally, if you always wanted to experience the zombie apocalypse on Switch, then The Walking Dead has you covered with The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season. Not a very sexy subtitle, I admit, but it should attract lots of fans of the prolific series.
Next up, since the Game Guide is behaving, here’s the latest sales to check out. If you love old school tough RPGs, then you should check out 7th Dragon III Code: VFD (3DS) for $19.79; for frantic racing mayhem, you might enjoy Space Ribbon (Switch) for $9.89; for a more recent RPG, Shining Resonance Refrain (Switch) might appeal at the mild discounted price of $39.99; for platforming fun, Yoku’s Island Express (Switch) is an easy call at $11.99; for a unique looking flight sim, Sky Rogue (Switch) might be worth it for $13.99; if you want a weird Bomberman-style game, BRAWL (Switch) is super cheap for $0.99; for your horror fix, The Coma: Recut (Switch) is quite cheap at $5.99; for sword and sorcery with friends, Nine Parchments (Switch) is nicely priced at $7.99; for something stylish and violent, Serial Cleaner (Switch) is affordable at $7.49; if you always wanted to be an Iron Chef, then now is the time to get Battle Chef Brigade (Switch) for $11.99; for a simple puzzle game, Piczle Lines DX (Switch) might be a worth a try for $10.49; if you love dungeon crawling, Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight (3DS) is down to $14.99; for a frenetic game, 99Moves (Wii U) should satisfy that itch for $1.24; for more Etrian fun, you might enjoy Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millenium Girl (3DS) for only $9.99 and for some finger licking fun, you might enjoy Toki Tori (Wii U) for a mere $0.49. Next up, My Nintendo is doing its level best to keep us interested with some September deals. They have a bunch of discounts on Selects games, wallpapers, guides and more. If you don’t already own any of these titles, it’s worth checking out the full list, which can be found here.
Finally, let’s get to perhaps my favorite part of the Nintendo Download – the new digital games! The following are all out starting next week. Son of a Witch offers rogue fun with friends; Moonfall Ultimate is a 2D side scrolling RPG; God Wars The Complete Legend offers a robust tactical RPG; Claws of Furry provides frantic beat-em-up mayhem and lastly is Ninjin: Clash of Carrots, which has ninja rabbits. A very diverse crop of games, but there’s more where that came from!
If you love simple puzzle games, bloxiq might be for you. For your retro fix, ACA NEOGEO has you covered with Crossed Swords. If you prefer some RPG fun, there are two very different titles in Fall of Light: Darkest Edition and Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle. For survival horror, you might want to try Phantaruk. To relive gaming’s past, you might try The VideoKid. And last but not least, if you love retro tributes with tons of style and panache, you owe it to yourself to try Freedom Planet on Switch. Even if you already played it on Steam, this is the best console to play this delightful game on, in my opinion.
That’s it for this week’s Nintendo Download! Tune in to oprainfall next Thursday for the latest batch of Nintendo games worth playing.
