From the director of Cowboy Bebop comes the anime prequel to Blade Runner 2049. Titled Blade Runner Black Out 2022, the film is set three years after the original film. The anime, as described by Crunchyroll, “marks the year that an ‘EMP detonation caused a global blackout that has massive, destructive implications all over the world.’” Shinichiro Watanabe went as far to say, “Blade Runner was definitely the movie that influenced me the most as an anime director.”

Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is the last in a trilogy of short films bridging the gap between the original movie and upcoming Blade Runner 2049. The other two short films, 2036: Nexus Dawn and 2048: Nowhere to Run, are both live action.
