Episode 13: Towering Nightmare

Welcome back to more Mary Skelter Nightmares!

Today we tackle Area 3 of the Temple and immediately face off with the Marchen protecting the core.

After dealing with that threat we proceed to map out the area before coming to a large building. The Nightmare sensing its chance proceeds to grow and chase us into the tower. What follows is a rather tough series of battles are we fight for our lives and to clear the rest of Chapter 3. …and our adventure.

Additional Thoughts and Notes

First off I really gotta compliment the dungeon designers on this floor. I really thought that central area was just one large section. Really surprised that it was actually four smaller ones. I really do like how if you don’t map everything carefully, you can actually trick yourself.

As for the Giant Nightmare fight, I have several thoughts. First I really do like the idea. The pace is frantic and it does induce a sense of dread in the player. Plus mixing the real-time elements in the way it does keeps you on your toes.

I do have a few concerns though. First, is the explanation that was given. I didn’t realize I had to fight part of the Nightmare on each floor, which of course led me to do this battle the hard way. That said, that could be entirely my fault for misunderstanding the instructions. But, I do wish it was a little clearer.

Secondly, the inability to revive or use items outside of battle. I understand the idea is that everything is supposed to be occurring in real-time. However, there should be a way I can access the menu outside of an encounter so I can revive or heal my party. Otherwise, it can turn the entire encounter into a luck-based mission as was evident from the first few seconds of my first attempt. Still, as a whole, I do enjoy the idea. It can just be better is all I’m saying.

Finally, thanks to IFI for letting me show off Cinderella’s introduction despite it being part of Chapter 4. I decided to reach out and double check that it was ok to show and they were fine with it. Just goes to show you professional courtesy goes a long way. ^_^
