Dragon Quest VIII

Recently at a PAX panel, Nintendo showed off some localized footage of Dragon Quest VIII for the 3DS. The footage showed that just like the original PlayStation 2 release the game will contain English voice acting.  However, just like the recently released Dragon Quest VII remake, the 3DS port of Dragon Quest VIII will seemingly not contain orchestrated music.

I’m a bit torn as I really loved the orchestrated music in the original release, but I do enjoy MIDI music as well. How do you feel? Let us know in the comments below!

I’m confident the music will still be quite good, but likely not *as* good as the PS2 release. Glad it’ll have the English dubbing though, I thought they did a nice job on that actually.

Have to keep expectations modest considering it is a 3DS release. I would have preferred the orchestra music as well. Does the Japanese release have orchestral soundtrack like DQVII? If so it could be patched in if wanted

The Japanese version does, in fact, have an orchestral score. The original Japanese PS2 release had neither voice acting, nor orchestral score; the Japanese 3DS version added both improvements. It was only the Western PS2 version that had voice acting and orchestral music.

      Thanks for the info!

This is the exact opposite of the PS2 localization… kinda. =P

I stick with my PS2 copy.

    Bravo Nintendo of America

I wonder why the DQ games are getting Midi’s instead of orchestra in the first place. Apparently DQ7 on mobile uses midis and that was never localised.

I think this is fine. Just a subtle change. Enough reason for me to get it to see these changes. At least I have one to play on the television and one on the go.

Sucks. The orchestrated battle music and overworld theme are vastly better than the midi versions. Oh well.
