Heart & Slash

A fascinating indie game was just given a release date and trailer. Heart&Slash is a retro styled 3D action game that is a hybrid of several classics, but seems to also have it’s own unique vision. It will release June 24, 2016 on both PS4 and XBox One. Take a look at the press release information for this successfully developed Kickstarter game.

ABOUT THE GAME
Successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2014, Heart&Slash is a fast-paced 3D brawler with roguelike elements set in a colorful yet desolate world. You fight as Heart, a malfunctioning robot trying to escape the grip of mindless machines in a future where humans are no more.

Along the way, you meet Slash. Naturally, Heart tries to capture Slash’s attention through several playthroughs — which is far from easy since Slash is a somewhat rough veteran. *How* and *if* Heart succeeds actually depends on your choices: Each quest undertaken, for example, is a chance to woo Slash; you’ll have a couple of opportunities during every playthrough to define how the relationship evolves. Will you choose independence, or will you change in order to be loved? Will you find a balance that will allow your love story to thrive? The choice is yours 🙂

DEVELOPER QUOTE
Juan Raigada (Creative Director, aheartfulofgames):

“Early Access was an important step in Heart&Slash’s development. While we Kickstarted the game and had enough funding to see it through to completion, we reached a stage in development where we felt the need to gather as much feedback as possible to make the best game we could.”

After three years of development and taking the constructive criticism of Early Access players into account, Heart&Slash will be making its worldwide debut on console and desktop platforms. The title will also be getting a retail release in select territories 🙂

KEY FEATURES
* Fight using 75 different weapons and 60 different body parts that will change the way the game plays. Teleport, stop time, fly with a jetpack, wall-jump, discover enemy weaknesses, and more. From the trivial to the game-changing, you can try thousands of different combinations.

* Die and try again. Permadeath means Heart&Slash is not an easy game — but dying shouldn’t matter, since robots can be cloned easily and indefinitely. Every time you start a new game, the levels you fight through and the items or weapons you collect will change.

* Unique art style that will bring back the memories of game systems long gone.

* Almost no downtime. Levels are short and brutal.

AVAILABILITY
Heart&Slash will launch on June 24, 2016 to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 worldwide. The desktop version has been available on Steam Early Access; the final release (Windows/Mac/Linux) will launch in August (all territories).

Now check out the wildly kinetic trailer, we’ll be keeping an eye on this indie game and others like it at Operation Rainfall.

About William Haderlie

Born in the 1970's, I've been an avid participant for much of video game history. A lifetime of being the sort of supergeek entrenched in the sciences and mathematics has not curbed my appreciation for the artistry of video games, cinema, and especially literature.

Wait a minute, they started developing it on PC, it will get a fully release on consoles on the end of June, and the full release on PC will be available on August?

    • William Haderlie

It’s already available on Steam Early Access. But it does look like they will be patching the console updates back into the Steam version to be a “Final Version” in August, as you said.

That’s an interesting mash of genres. I may check it out, but Odin Sphere takes priority.
