Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda on the Wii U has been faced with multiple delays and teased footage, but most recently fans have been speculating whether or not the game will be coming to the Wii U or NX and the gender of Link.

Twitter user Emily Rogers @ArcadeGril64 has posted answers to a few of these rumors. She is confirming the release of The Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, players will be able to choose the gender of Link, and there will be no voice acting for Link. You can read the series of Tweets below:

Emily Rogers has been correct on some of her claims, like when she revealed what was to be Paper Mario: Color Splash. So now fans can only wait to see what will come out of these claims, while also wondering if this is what they want for this long standing franchise.

The Legend of Zelda is coming to Wii U.

[Author’s Edit] It’s been brought to my attention that the Tweet says, “choose between a male of female as your playable character in Zelda”. This has no mention of Link, so this could be referring to an unrevealed character. We will be sure to update the readers as the story develops. Thank’s KissDisqus.

“I heard from multiple sources that you can choose between a male or female as your playable character in Zelda.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean you can play as a female Link. Just that you could play as a female character.

No voice acting? No more of HAH and HYAAAAAGH?!

Look at me generalizing a timeless game and thinking that Link will always be the main character. I should be shamed! but i’ll add something cause you’re right.

    • Hogtree Octovish

Well, there is always the titular Princess Zelda.
      Or a Sheik/Tetra-esque alt-form of her.
      Or even Impa.

    • Christian Beach

Impa as Link’s travel companion would be awesome!

    • Christian Beach

Interesting how she says “I heard from multiple sources” and yet doesn’t list any sources. This rumor could very well be some made up BS to either hype people up, piss them off, or just downright confuse them.

  • Mr0303

The select screen will be a sweaty Link and a mini guillotine near his nether areas.

    • Christian Beach

Oh dear lord please no XD

  • deadeye

If it’s true, I think it’s a perfect opportunity to use Linkle.

I can totally see her addition to Hyrule Warriors being a test to see how people responded, and pretty much everyone loved her.

    • azariosays

I’m a fan of Linkle, but only if she is Tingle’s daughter and they are both just obsessed with Link.

    • deadeye

      That’s fair.

  • Jake

Makes sense, seeing as they introduced Linkle (read: female Link) in HW. However, while Linkle operates differently than Link in HW, I can’t see there being anything more than cosmetic differences between the two in an actual Zelda game. AKA no dual crossbows. 🙁

    • Christian Beach

Pretty sure she’s not a female Link.

    RIP Wii U.

I HIGHLY doubt Nintendo would be stupid enough to change the gender of one of their most beloved and iconic characters. That being said, I will not deny this rumor’s existence, just the way its presented. Here’s my ultimate theory:

In the January 2013 Nintendo Direct, Eiji Aonuma discussed some of the conventions that were being changed for the new game. One of these old conventions was “Playing by yourself”. This means the game can be played by at least 2 players. This rumor, while stating that we’ll get “gender options”, may actually be referring to this multiplayer feature, in which we would be able to play either as Link or his travel companion, which will likely be a female due to both this rumor and the trend of female travel companions in Zelda games.

But who is this travel companion? Given that Aonuma has recently stated just how much of an influence Twilight Princess [HD] will have on the game, and given that we’ve seen no sign of a travel companion yet, this travel companion may actually be a Twili, but it’s unclear if this Twili is Midna or some new character. Perhaps the reason we haven’t seen this Twili character yet is because we may have only seen gameplay from the single player mode, which would mean this Twili is hiding in Link’s shadow.

Also, the reason I highly doubt Nintendo would change Link’s gender is because of the very essence of the character himself. Regardless of his multiple incarnations, the general character of Link is male. People see him and recognize him as male. It’s the essence of his character.
