SEGA is teasing a new game project with the codename “Project 3939.00.” If you check out the teaser website, you’ll be greeted with a series of undulating colored lines against a white backdrop, with the text “3939.00 / 39” superimposed on the lines.
Spoilers: this is almost certainly a new Hatsune Miku-related title. SEGA has been developing rhythm games featuring her and other popular Vocaloids for a few years under the Project DIVA and Project Mirai franchise names. Additionally, take note of the colors of the lines; they correspond to each of the six Vocaloids most frequently featured in the games as playable (Miku, the Kagamine siblings, MEIKO, KAITO, and Megurine Luka.)
The numbers may also seem strange, but 39 is relevant for Miku herself. March 9th (3/9!) is known as Miku Day in Japan. 39 can be read in two ways. First is “sankyu” which is a combination of 3 “san” and 9 “kyu”, together forming a “thank you.” Alternatively, there is another set of number descriptors in Japanese besides the standard “ichi, ni, san,” and etc.. When following this other sequence, 39 can be pronounced as “Miku.”
Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX (titled Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai Deluxe in Japan) is soon to be released in Europe and North America. Next month, in fact. Another funny thing about next month is that Tokyo Game Show 2015 is taking place then, so we’ll see news on this game at that time for sure!
