Up until last week, visiting the website of Scott Cawthon, creator of the surprise hit series Five Nights at Freddy’s, would simply yield the image of a lone top hat lit by a spotlight. This image, uploaded shortly after the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, along with the ending(s) to the game, gave the impression that the series and the terror were finally over. Then last week, fans were sent into a panicked frenzy when the top hat suddenly disappeared from the image. Where did it go? Why did it go? What did this mean? Finally, the image was recently changed into what you see above. Five Nights at Freddy’s 4: The Final Chapter will be released this Halloween.
While the third game did answer some questions about the series’ overarching plot, the series still has mysteries that haven’t yet been answered–notably, the identity of the serial killer known by fans as the Purple Man, the nature of the shadow animatronics from 2 and 3, what exactly happened at the infamous Bite of ’87, and just what caused the original Fredbear’s Family Diner to close. Fans currently expect Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 to address the Bite of ’87 at the very least, given the glitched-out appearance of the official site, heavily featuring the numbers 8 and 7.
