Valkyrie Drive

Marvelous, the publishers of the Senran Kagura series, have released some details on their forthcoming multimedia project called Valkyrie Drive. The storyline centers on a series of five islands where beautiful girls live and fight one another in epic duels with every kind of weapon conceivable. The concept is described as “beautiful girl sexy battle action” if that helps to give one an idea of what they expect from Valkyrie Drive. To get a better idea of what fans can look forward to, check out the debut teaser video. The theme song is “Oh No, Oh No”, performed by Hitomi Harada. This is probably classifiable as NSFW in most work places so take proper caution before you decide when to watch.

As one can see, similarities abound to the aforementioned Senran Kagura in terms of content and presentation. It’s not going to be the exact same thing, but it isn’t straying too far in terms of the action and character aesthetics. Doubtless, one can expect some of the craziest battles Marvelous has ever produced to grace their TV, PS Vita and mobile devices in the near future.

Marvelous has a three-pronged attack in three different mediums lined up for the Valkyrie Drive project, each of which will flesh out a different part of the world the characters inhabit and each taking place on different islands.

First is the anime series Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid. Helmed by Yosuke Kuroda (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Hayate the Combat Butler). The story focuses on the island of Mermaid, where the protagonists Maiden Mamori and Mirei Shikishima reside.

Next up is the PS Vita game, Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuni. The staff includes producer Kenichiro Takaki (Senran Kagura, Senran Kagura Burst) and character designs from Warai Manakakk0. The heroines for the PS Vita game are Ranka and Rinka Kagurazaka.

Valkyrie Drive: Bhikkhuri’s story sheds a little more light on the overall plot. On the island of Bhikkhuri (and possibly the others), people in their teens and twenties are infected with a virus that grants them the ability to summon forth weapons but only after they’ve undergone an enhancement procedure that allows them to harness these remarkably advantageous side effects. The people that receive said enhancements are known as Rebreakers. The gameplay will focus on an aggressive attack style, with the player taking control of Ranka and Rinka and defeating swarms of enemies. The characters will improve their Synchronization Rate as the game progresses and this gradually evolves their weaponization abilities, attack combinations and dialogue. Famitsu provided details and screenshots.

Lastly, the social media game is called Valkyrie Drive: Siren. It’s set to have ties to both the anime and the PS Vita game and could very well be the bridge between them. The game will be free to play with microtransactions, and so far the two revealed characters are Setsuke Kisaragi and Urara Sashou.
