Splatoon, Nintendo’s debut of its latest new IP as a third-person shooter, has become more and more playable by the general press as time as gone on. As such, Nintendo Public Relations reveal more and more at the same rate.
Reggie Fils-Amié (the almighty PR mastermind of Nintendo), President of Nintendo of America has stated in an interview that Splatoon is “aiming to do for action shooters what Mario Kart did for racing.” He points out this comparison as he labels it a “major” new IP for Nintendo and that Splatoon is “not about kills. It’s designed to be fun no matter what your skill level is.”
This comparison seems bold to make but seems feasible to pull off. It’s great that Nintendo is thinking about trying to make something (like Splatoon) being as catchy as Mario Kart. Mario Kart is considered a breathe of fresh air from the serious simulation racers. Splatoon is praised by much press for doing the same thing for shooters by squirting (pun intended) color onto the often brown and grey world of shooting games. Nintendo is after all the same company that made people want to play RTS games on a home console in Pikmin by turning the genre on its head.
Splatoon is set to release in May of this year. With all of the expectations for the possible little game that could in Splatoon, will you be picking it up? Do you feel that Reggie is accurate when comparing it’s position to shooters as Mario Kart?
