Last night at Nintendo’s fincial briefing, CEO and president Satoru Iwata revealed some interesting information about amiibo:
NES Game Demos- Amiibos will offer demos or certain scenes of NES games that the character appeared in. It is not the full game, but rather a timed demo. There will be different demos of the same game for each.
amiibo Cards- Yep, cards are on there way according to Iwata. They will no doubt function much in the same way as the figures do. No other information was provided.
Limited Run amiibos- Iwata stated in the briefing that some limited edition versions will be appearing.

Looks like the Gold Mario amiibo will be Walmart exclusive!
