Warning: This review contains spoilers for Episode 7 of Celestial Method.
In this episode, Nonoka, Yuzuki and Koharu head up to Nonoka’s mother’s grave for her birthday. I was hoping we wold see their reaction to her mother being dead, but it looks like they might have known the whole time or just got told off camera. Personally, I hope they were told off camera since it makes Yuzuki and Shione seem like super jerks. Considering they were both slapping Nonoka around for forgetting about them when she was younger, it’s a dick move to do that, even knowing she had other things going on.
One thing I think was really well done this episode was the gradual change of the weather and lighting to reflect the mood. We start off with it sunny and Nonoka, Yuzuki and Koharu headed somewhere by train. They seem to be in good spirits at the start but slowly but surely it becomes clear Nonoka is down about something. As they arrive — and Yuzuki gets them lost again — the weather becomes cloudy and the scenes become more grey until you learn they’re off to see Nonoka’s mom. By that point it’s snowing, something the show relates to the time when they were children and to more sad and melancholy times.
Interestingly enough, Shione was at the grave. She not only cleaned it but put out flowers, the same kind that Nonoka picked up and can be seen in her mother’s hospital room during the flashback. She has been standoff-ish and against being Nonoka’s friend while apparently going to see her mother. Personally, I don’t see why she was so upset. I could understand her being upset if she thinks Nonoka ran off to join the circus. But by her being at the grave and making it clear she goes every year the same time of year, she has known for some time that Nonoka’s mom passed away. So why the cold shoulder?
As we wrap up this episode, it’s left off with us finally about to learn more about Shione. Personally, I am excited since it seems like the more we learn the less it makes any sense. Not to mention we still don’t know when and how Noel’s magical space powers will be kicking in.
