We enter the second half of the year on a down week in the Media Create charts. While software took the brunt of it with only one new game releasing this past week, hardware stayed relatively untouched. There was a dip below 10,000 for the Wii U and the Vita did fall about 4,000 units, but the numbers and placements pretty much stayed the same.

Mario Kart 8 - Media Create | oprainfall

And I’m having trouble coming to terms with what Mario Kart 8 is to the Wii U in Japan. The game has sold 2 million copies worldwide but only a quarter of that in the region. It has helped the Wii U move units — and even better its weekly numbers from this time last year — but it hasn’t really driven the console sales in the region like I hoped. Hopefully, the games coming later this year will help its case.

Moving over to software, we have one new release in the Top 20 to talk about. That would be Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed. This is the PS4 port of Acquire’s adventure game. The PS3 and Vita versions will release in North America on August 5th, 2014, courtesy of Marvelous USA/XSEED Games.

As for returning games, Freedom Wars, Yo-kai Watch, Taiko no Tatsujin, Mario Kart 8, and the PS4 port of Watch Dogs make up the Top 5. Mario Kart 8 also moved past 500,000 units sold in the region this past week. Further down the list, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth is closing in on 250,000. And while it happened last week, we can see — with its return to the Top 20 — that Mario Party: Island Tour has surpassed the 400,000 mark.
