With both of their 8th generation consoles out, it is “A Tale of Two Gens” for Sony. On one hand, you have the PS4, the current top selling console of the generation, easily surpassing the Wii U with its year long head start and blowing the Xbox One out of the gates. On the other hand, you have the Vita, the handheld that, despite being more powerful and within the same price point as its competition as well as receiving support from pretty much everywhere, is floundering and struggling for mainstream relevancy.
Sony needs to keep up the momentum they have with the PS4 while still showing support (as small as it may be) for the PS3. In addition, they need to push the Vita to the forefront of the handheld battle if it’s going to stand a chance against the 3DS.
Anyway, after the NO MONTAGE OPENING, we begin with Destiny, the big collaboration between Bungie and Activision. The game was teased last year at the PS4 meeting and shown at the end of Sony’s E3 conference. The trailer shows quite a bit of the universe inside the game. Destiny will be in Beta July 17th first on PS4 with a full release coming September 9th. Those who want to may be able to sign up for the limited Beta that launches on Thursday by going to www.greatnessawaits.com/destiny. In addition, a white PS4 Destiny Bundle will be made available when the game launches. Exclusive content will also be coming to the PlayStation consoles at launch.
Following Destiny comes The Order: 1886, a game from Santa Monica Studio and Ready at Dawn that was revealed last year. The game appears to have horror elements in its action-adventure gameplay.
After The Order comes a new game called Entwined. This game was teased earlier this year when a trademark for the game appeared. The game has been made available immediately for $9.99 on the PS4.
Next up is inFAMOUS: First Light, the latest game from SuckerPunch. The game will have additional content if you own Second Son. It is coming this August.
Next, we have the LittleBigPlanet 3, the latest game in the series first created by Media Molecule (although let go by them starting with LittleBigPlanet Karting). New characters were introduced to help Sackboy, including a dog-like Oddsock, a bird name Swoop, and a creature that can change sizes named Toggle. LittleBigPlanet 3 is coming this November. In addition, all levels that were created in the first two games will be playable in LBP3.
Shuhei Yoshida from Worldwide Studios came on to talk about a new game called Bloodborne. The game will be created by From Software, developers of the Dark Souls series, and released exclusively on PS4. The game is slated for release in 2015.
Coming up next is the first gameplay footage of Far Cry 4 from Ubisoft. This new installment will be taking the game into the Himilayas. This is the second time we’ve seen footage from the game, as Ubisoft showed off the first five minutes of the game at their conference earlier today. During this playthrough, we see a second player joining in to provide support in a helicopter. This can happen with your friends on PSN, even if they don’t have the game. Far Cry 4 is scheduled to release on November 18th, 2014.
More third party support was shown as Adam Boyes, Sony’s Vice President of Third Party Relations, took to the stage. Shown first after he took the stage was Dead Island 2, taking a much more humorous tone in the trailer than previous installments in the game. The game will have a 30 day Beta before it launches.
Diablo III will be coming soon to PS4. When the Ultimate Evil Edition launches, enemies from The Last of Us will be included.
After the zombies, we get another look at Battlefield: Hardline. If you missed it, an exclusive console Beta was announced for the PS4. Check out the EA Recap to learn more.
Along with exclusives content in mature games, Sony with have 6 exclusive characters at launch for Disney Infinity 2. These include The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and more.
A game from Paradox Interactive was shown called Magicka 2. The trailer that was shown was rather humorous, with a mage that was unemployed becoming excited when the game is revealed.
After a humorous plea from Tim Schafer, as a 10 year old girl named Sally, Sony announced that Grim Fandango, an old game of Schafer’s, would be remastered for the PS4 and Vita.
And now, a parade of indies from Devolver Digital. The following games will make their console debuts on PlayStation consoles.
- Titan Souls
- Not a Hero
- Hotline Miami 2
- The Talos Principle
Next, we see a game by Suda51, the crazy mind behind No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and killer7. This new game will be called Let It Die. It will be coming exclusively to the PS4 in 2015.
After that, we saw the world premiere of Abzu. The game comes from one of the creators of Journey and also has its composer.
Before leaving the stage, Adam shows off one more game: No Man’s Sky, a procedurally generated open world game created by small indie studio Hello Games. The was first shown off at VGX late last year. No Man’s Sky will makes its console debut on the PS4.
After talking about games, Andrew House appeared on stage to talk about the future of PlayStation tech. Project Morpheus was talked about, with demo stations set up at the expo. Hopefully, one of our guys at the show will have a chance to try it out.
After the quick tech talk, we see the new SCE America CEO Shawn Layden, who came on with quite a bit of excitement. Talking about apps on PS4, Layden stated that PS4 gamers will be allowed to upload share videos to YouTube soon. New content for The Playroom will allow for custom sets for streaming.
Free to Play games were talked about for a bit. 25 games were said to be in development to come to PlayStation consoles. Games that were shown and talked about were Planetside 2, Guns Up, Kingdom Under Fire, War Thunder, and BigFest.
PlayStation Now was given some time. This is the service that Gaikai became. PlayStation 3 games will become available when it launches. It will also come to smart TVs (as long as you have a DualShock controller), PS3, and Vita. An open Beta will be coming to the United States and Canada on July 31st.
The Vita TV, now known as PlayStation TV, will be coming West for $99, with a $139 bundle that includes a DualShock 3, a 8GB memory card, and a digital copy of The LEGO Movie: The Game. PSTV will be able to play PS4 games via Remote Play on a second TV as well as Vita games and numerous PS3 games via PlayStation Now.
After the business talk from Layden, we got the world premiere of Mortal Kombat X. The game was teased last week with a trailer that featured Sub-Zero and Scorpion. The trailer that was shown was wonderfully brutal (don’t you just love night time events?).
Andrew House then came back out to talk about TV programming coming to PS4. The first original show announced was Powers, based on the graphical novel. 2 seasons/series have been greenlit for the show. It will premiere in the United States in December, with the first episode being free. PS Plus members will be able to watch the entire show for free.
After Powers came the trailer for Ratchet and Clank: The Movie. The movie will be coming to theaters in 2015. Insomniac Games will have major part in developing the movie. In addition, a remake of the first game will be coming as well to PS4. Both will be coming in the first half of 2015.
Next, we get a trailer for the PS4 version of The Last of Us. The upgraded port will be coming on July 29th, 2014.
After The Last of Us, we get a look at the latest trailer of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. No release date has been given.
The trailer, we get a look at Grand Theft Auto V on the PS4. The upgraded port will be coming Fall 2014. In addition, those that have played the game in the previous generation can move their progress to the PS4.
Up next, we get a look at gameplay for Batman: Arkham Knight, the latest game in the Batman Arkham series. Arkham Knight is slated for a 2015 release.
Finishing up the conference, we get the latest game in Naughty Dog’s big action series, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. From the sounds of things in the trailer, it may be the last adventure for Sully, longtime treasure hunter and mentor to Drake. Check out the trailer here.
And that is it for Sony’s PlayStation conference. Excited for what’s to come? Disappointed that certain games weren’t announced? Let us know in the comments.
And, like all of these events, this article will be updated periodically through the night with new info, images, and trailers as we get them.
