It’s no secret that handhelds are king in Japan. Heck, just look at the titles in the Top 20 of the Media Create charts and you’ll see that more than half are for handheld consoles, with 8 coming from the 3DS and 2 each for the Vita and PSP.
I bring this up because the PlayStation Portable has reached 20,000,000 units sold in Japan, a mark that has only been eclipsed by three other consoles, two of which are handhelds. This is an impressive feat for any console but it is especially impressive for the PSP. This isn’t just Sony’s first handheld but the first handheld console in history to take on Nintendo and survive. Sure, 80 million worldwide may only make up about 34% of the total market share for the generation but it is nothing to sneeze at, especially when going up against a handheld juggernaut. It’s an amazing mark that not many consoles in history can boast.
Over on the software side of things, Monster Hunter 4 continues to dominate the charts with over 200,000 units sold this past week. If it continues this pace, it would join Animal Crossing: New Leaf as the second 3 million seller for the 3DS in Japan.
Also releasing this week was Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, the newest iteration of Warriors Orochi 3. The game combined for over 100,000 in sales for both PS3 and Vita, with the PS3 version garnering 80,398 units sold. No word on whether this iteration will be localized for Western audiences. However, it is possible to import the game as both systems are region-free.
Finally, the latest game in The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails in the Flash, has released in Japan to nearly 150,000 units sold for PS3 and Vita, with the Vita port selling 81,622 units, good enough for 2nd place this week. So far, there is no word on whether this game will be localized. And given how current Legend of Heroes localizing publisher XSEED Games has said how wordy each of these games are, it could take a long time before any publisher, XSEED included, could get this game over to the West.
