Tank battle anime Girls und Panzer may have concluded late March 2013, but the show’s producers aren’t ready to mothball it yet. On April 28, the show’s official Twitter feed announced three upcoming Japan-only releases: a “fan disc,” a sixth OVA, and a movie.
The fan disc will feature videos of the Girls und Panzer Heartful Tank Carnival held at the Differ Ariake arena in Tokyo on April 28 (Japan Standard Time). It boasts 200 minutes of content divided into two parts. The first part is a 120-minute documentary of the carnival. The second part is 80 minutes of supplementary material, including a making-of documentary on the show and a “fan event report.”
In addition, due to fan demand, the fan disc will include a CD single featuring a new recording of “Yuki no Shingun” (「雪の進軍」, meaning “march of snow” or “snowy advance”), the World War II march Yukari and Erwin briefly sang in episode 9. The two-disc DVD version of the Heartful Tank Carnival fan disc will have a suggested retail price of ¥5,040, while the Blu-ray version will have a suggested retail price of ¥6,300. (For comparison, a ticket to the carnival cost ¥6,000.) Both will be released September 25 in Japan.
The sixth OVA will be a midquel fleshing out Ōarai Girls’ Academy’s glossed-over match against Anzio High at the end of episode 7. There’s no information on whether it’ll be a standalone release or bundled with a Girls und Panzer DVD or Blu-ray volume like the first five OVAs. No release date has been specified.
The movie will be a sequel to the series, according to the official Girls und Panzer blog. Series director Tsutomu Mizushima will direct. No other plot details were revealed. The movie will be released 2014 in Japan.
Unfortunately for English-speaking fans, while season 1 of Girls und Panzer is available for streaming on Crunchyroll, the OVAs have yet to become available there. There’s no word on whether this will change, nor has there been any word of an English-language DVD or Blu-ray release of any episodes, OVAs, or other video features. For now, the Heartful Tank Carnival fan disc, Anzio OVA, and movie sequel remain Japanese exclusives.
