disgaea dimension 2 laharl and friends

If you’re a fan of Disgaea series like I am, then you’re probably already excited for Disgaea Dimension 2. This new installment for the series reprises the vainglorious Overlord Laharl once again as the lead role since Disgaea Hour of Darkness, the first in the series.

And for today’s news, we have a brand new trailer, and one that’s centered around Laharl.

In this trailer — though it should be noted that every Disgaea sequel successfully does this — the game looks bigger and better than ever before, and with more explosions and stacking to inflict Massive Damage than each previous installment. Interestingly, however; Laharl’s narrating the trailer makes the gameplay give off a more impacting effect (though it’s ironic that his debut as lead role on new hardware on one that is on its way out). The retrospect on the visual style and events from Disgaea Hour of Darkness is also a good touch.

Looking further in, we see some more new characters in addition to ones we already know, as well as returning faces like Etna and Flonne. The segments of animation in between the pompous voice-overs look remarkably different from that of the other games, with slick visuals and balance between action and pretty imagery.

We also get to see the new Item Sea mechanic, which is replaces Item World, an existing feature for all Disgaea games. It works essentially the same as Item World does, but instead of advancing levels, you travel islands on pirate ships and do battle for treasure, with enemy bosses guarding the chests.

Disgaea Dimension 2 is slated to release in Japan at March 20, 2013. As of now this game should be in its last stages of development, and it is only time before we hear anything by Nipon Ichi Software America for American localization.
